True, SOAP is spearheaded by M$ (correct me if I am wrong as I hardly ever hear of M$ being innovative in CS and more in marketing). It is based on xmlrpc but takes a step forward. It does exception handling, for example. And in the spirit of OOP, the O in SOAP is object, and so it handles objects. xml-rpc is an old concept of remote protocol call with the callingmessage serialized using xml. Its drawback, one of them, is that it can only handle primitive types and string and arrays for parameters and return values. It's sort of like enterprise java beans but not nearly as complex and with as many layers of overhead(ache).
