GD lib does not support .gif's anymore in any version > 1.6 due to issues with the patent holder for the gif format.

since the time for that patent is running out in 2003 we might see a newer version of GD lib in 2003 that might feature .gif support again.

so the only way to get it to work is to get your hands on a version that is "older" than 1.6 ... there might be legal issues, but thats up to you guys (don't think anyone'd really care, since they'd have to proove that you create .gifs "on the fly")
