Subject: Use MySQL-operations where possible

Your article is informative and very valuable. I must take exception with your indication to do math in PHP versus MySQL. No matter what DB you are using, my experience is that the DB engine is significantly faster at processing its data and if the query is correctly structured returns only those rows or sets that are appropriate for use. If you find that you are doing significant workload processing of row sets using math functions in PHP you may find it advantegous to evaluate the data constructs of your MySQL tables and optimize the strategy of the queries being used to return them.

As an example using a query which evaluates several thousand rows and performing calculations on multiple columns using PHP can take several minutes while the MySQL engine can return the same result in seconds. Allowing the display to be accomplished using PHP with final tweaking.
