Subject: Logging Performance and implementation

In the article "Logging With PHP3" I am not clear if what Tim was saying is a central server always collecting the info from all servers or each server collects their own logs and the central server just collect the info from the remote servers(i prefer the latter solution) when requested.

I was thinking about a theory: an addition on MySql SELECT BENCHMARK(100000000,1+1) is 6.85sec on my p3-800. I am pretty sure that is way faster than doing an INSERT 100,000,000 times. That is if you do everything locally, if you had to do this remotely it's even slower with the connect/disconnect time(plus traffic jam:).
It will be also more accurate to request a local up to date log than have a central server collecting data continuously.

Also If the web host has like couple hundred web site doing the same kind of logging system, and of course the ISP also does it own logging, how does the logging systems hinders the whole system in the worste case scenario(Unless they have couple T3 lines in store).

Anyhow I might be going side tracked, and talking the same idea as Tim, but just wanted to be sure that is the case.
