Please see http://register.shelby.tn.us/gis/

This application uses phpMapScript to generate (on the fly) images from approx. 800 images (tiled) to make up the arial photos of Shelby County TN. Each of the images was 5000 X 5000 pixels (at 1sq-ft per pixel) and better than 1 meg each.

I ended up scripting the Linux server (ImageMap, if I remember correctly) to generate a resized second layer of images to 600 X 600 pixels so that "zooming in" would not be so slow.

This was a very complicated application. In addition to getting all of the images right (had to be in the correct plane), the app also retrieves parcel data from 2 different databases and links to other web applications. It creates the image on the fly from reading the stored images given the extents, etc. A script is run nightly to delete the generated images. This is a very resource intensive program.

If you are using images such as aerial photos, MapScript is the only way to go!
