Weedpacket 08-19-2002, 01:26 AM Can you make those checkboxes? "Windows 2000 - I only ever use it as VT100 emulator..." ShawnD 08-19-2002, 08:29 AM Linux, Windows XP locked me out of my computer and won't let me register. i formatted my hard drive because it was getting tons of memory problems. after formatting, the problems stopped BUT i could not register Windows because it said i already registered and i'll be dead before i hand out 150 bucks every time i have to format my computer because of MS's shotty programming. rrijnders 10-01-2002, 05:13 PM I have Win98, NT, 2000, XP, and Linux installed on my various development machines. Each of the Windows machines has had to be re-installed an average of three time this year. The Linux box has never even been re-booted. I dual boot Linux/KDE and Win2KPro on my laptop. Guess which hasn't had to be re-installed yet... I am now looking at Macs. (When you're done laughing, read on) I borrowed a TI Book for 2 weeks, loaded with OS X 10.2 (Jaguar). It's based on FreeBSD, ported for Mac with the "Aqua" desktop. I gotta tell ya, it's rock solid and ultra smooth. Apache works. PHP works. PostgreSQL works. Perl works. All my Linux utilities work. I found all my midrange and mainframe utilities with versions that run on it; even Cisco VPN and Microsoft Terminal Services Client! I have one issue left: I work extensively with JD Edward's One World XP client software written in PowerBuilder for Win2KPro. They gave me a Win2K emulator for the Mac. So far, the JD Edward's One World XP Demo Junior (training software) loaded and runs without issue. If the full version runs... You might see my ugly mug on the next "switch" promo... daveyboy 10-01-2002, 07:03 PM Rock solid, never crashes. I run the same OS on the server at work. Win2k was okay, but XP is rancid. It treats you like a bloody idiot, and KDE3 is definitely on a par, interface-wise, even ignoring the bothersome messages and questions XP bombards you with. I don't play games, and I like to program and bugger about with my system. I really do not need Windows and really do not want it. kazer 10-01-2002, 11:13 PM I've got Win98se,NT4.0,XP,Debian(no gui) and Redhat for various platform testing. I'd like to give OS X a run one of these days. If I could get Photoshop for linux i'd say see-ya-****ing-later to windows. Anyone here given PS7 on VMWare a good run? -K (and no, GIMP doesn't do it for me) Weedpacket 10-02-2002, 12:17 AM Originally posted by kazer If I could get Photoshop for linux i'd say see-ya-****ing-later to windows. Unfortunately, Adobe's CEO doesn't like Linux; actually, he's not much into the Open Source idea at all, and selling a Linux port of Photoshop would be giving it support he and Bill Gates don't want to see it get. Plus, sales of Photoshop for Solaris bombed. rrijnders 10-02-2002, 01:56 AM Well Photoshop 7.1 is OSX 10.2 native for macs; can other *nix platforms be far off? nashirak 10-02-2002, 03:31 AM Have ya' heard of the gimp? :) just a simple apt-get install away. :D http://www.gimp.org/ Though not photoshope, still an extremely good Photo editor/creator. b0r3d 10-02-2002, 03:42 AM I'll stick with either MS Windows NT or Redhat 7.3. Cant seem to stand any other OS. =) b0r3d Weedpacket 10-02-2002, 04:24 AM Originally posted by rrijnders Well Photoshop 7.1 is OSX 10.2 native for macs; can other *nix platforms be far off? Anyone tried it under WINE? jmcneese 10-02-2002, 04:37 AM photoshop doesn't play well with wine, last time i checked. gimp is just as good, anyhow. daveyboy 10-02-2002, 06:47 PM gimp has more than enough functions for the common or garden graphic designer. you're gonna have to go for xfig or sketch if you need vectors, but otherwise, i think most folk will reach their limits before they reach the gimp's. i just wish it had a reasonable scripting language, not the impenetrable crap that is scheme or perl. juschillinnow 10-02-2002, 08:36 PM download corel draw for linux. It works great and is very comparable to photoshop. Oh yeah...and it's free I couldn't get photoshop to work right with WINE but did with Win4Lin. That's a great program if you still have to use windows programs. I was using redhat but had to go back to windows because of conflicts on the network. Seems Samba didn't want to cooperate. Windows has always done what it suppose to for me except for some memory management problems, but a simple reboot always solves that. johnnyv 07-21-2003, 10:39 PM Mandrake Linux for me. I like to rebuild most of the system optimised for my systems cpu. I like games but i only seem to find the time to play enemy territory and NWN these days. Oh and NWN runs faster and way! more stable than windows on the same hardware!. feldon23 07-21-2003, 10:40 PM Windows 2000 Rock solid, never crashes. I go weeks or months without rebooting. Windows XP is a toy. 2000 is a professional OS, the only OS Microsoft has put out that's worth the $$. I am 100% Apache/PHP/MySQL for websites. ScubaKing22 07-21-2003, 11:08 PM I use XP and Redhat9 and honestly I like both. I like how XP has the "attention" if you will of many developers so it has many software options available. Redhat, however, has much more built into it and is much more stable, but lacks as much support from software developers as Windows. Thats just my 2 cents :D laserlight 07-14-2005, 09:35 AM I usually use Windows XP, but I do switch over to CentOS4 (effectively Red Hat Enterprise Linux) for software/web development and testing. planetsim 07-14-2005, 09:55 AM Talk about a 2yr bump :) laserlight 07-14-2005, 10:06 AM heh, I thought it was new as I didnt post in it... but then something else is screwed up for it to have appeared on the first page if I was the one to have made the bump (or did someone delete a post while I was writing my reply?). thorpe 07-14-2005, 10:36 AM 2 X gentoo linux shifty18 07-14-2005, 12:00 PM i use Windows XP on my desktop, Server 2003 for my home servers and i wouldnt use anything else. They all run fine, never get any problems with them. Can do everything that I want a more. I have run 2 gaming companies all on Server 2000/2003 and they are great for game servers. I also heped run a 3rd on a linux and things where so much more difficult to get things started then windows. Also game servers run better on MS server, and that is proven fact head over to servermatrix.com forums to see the argument there, its a huge running discussion but its now pretty determined that MS servers are better for game servers. ryneaux 07-14-2005, 07:49 PM Windows XP and Suse Linux, I work both as a developer and as a graphic designer. I prefer linux on development projects and windows for graphics. I have attempted to work with Gimp. It definitely is comparable to Photoshop, but for the moment it just isn't so second nature to really be beneficial or as productive. PHP Builder
