i'm fascinated by some of the links you guys give. some of you guys program for like really high end sites :)

same hehe - i mainly use php to make the administration for my customers websites easier.
on the one hand a new design is much much easier realized (header/footer/css) and of course i can offer my customers a much greater usability of their sites. i generally make pages, thatn the customer can keep updated himself without knowing a single bit of html etc - just by using a simple interface - so post/edit/upload/delete/... content.

personally i also work on some projects for myself - the biggest one currently is www.nevergetoveryou.net

rofl that is so l337 compared to my crap site
http://shawnserver.d2g.com
it's for a game server for the game Team Fortress Classic. it would look a hell of a lot better if i had some sort of graphics editor like Paint Shop or PhotoShop. all the graphics on that page? they were done with MS Paint lol, the only 3 images are the background which is black with 2 S's and the 2 images at the top which are screenshots resized to 30% in Paint lol :D

I currently work for myself, got some help from my former employer to start a separate firm, devoted to linux/php developement. It rocks. The only drag is that I don't have enough money to hire more ppl yet. :(

This is a crappy communty site for me and my friends:
conseptional.com (http://conseptional.com)

Download my songs!! hehe mp3>mr_tron

And if you have a good connection, check out the long mixes by dj_vega, a very good friend of mine.
It was recorded when we had a party earlier this summer! :D

I can't help but think of that scene in Austin Powers whenever I read the title of this thread.

if you plan to be running a real site, by that i mean a site that can be used by more than just your family, register with d2g.com to make your site mysite.d2g.com or mysite.dyndns.org or something like that :)

Did you little test, got 18/20 but I disagree with both the wrong answers and want my score changing to 20/20

What is the code for Image? (Without the tags) (Easy)
A: Image=xxx.com
B: HTML=xxx.com
C: IMG SRC=xxx.com
D: None of the above

Your Answer: D
Correct Answer: C
Answer is incorrect

C: IMG SRC=xxx.com is not right, I have never seen an image file extention that end in .com so technically they are all wrong, so D is the correct answer

How much do domain names usually cost? (Medium)
A: $20.00
B: $10.00
C: $60.00
D: $30.00

Your Answer: A
Correct Answer: D
Answer is incorrect

You obviously shop in the wrong places

hmmm a few things...
in http://www.nevergetoveryou.net/top.php
<IMG SRC="deco/slogantop.gif" alt=$pagetitle" HSPACE="20"><BR>
Do'h!
same page (not PHP but I thought you might wanna know)
Line 290 of generated HTML file :
...<A HREF="media/band/dying_midwestern_-_seven_and_seven.mp3" onmouseover="writetxt('
and that's the end of the line... nothing afterward...

As far as this thread is concerned, I mostly don't do websites, I develop applications for people and my prefered language and technology is APACHE/PHP/MySQL so I do my stuff helping people doing there's :)

If you find errors feel free to email me or kick your screen (feels better afterward, you might not try that on a LCD screen, I cannot be held responsible for irrational behaviors regarding your hardware)

Technically you could buy a .com domain and have the default page send back a header containing an image or even define the default page as an image but it sounds a bit dumb to spend 15$ (that's what I pay for a domain) on an image...

And yes this post is useless but it's late, I am bored and I think there is always an answer when no question has been asked...

I recently left a developer position at ATTBI (ATT&T Broadband) to work on my own stuff. I operate www.mw-dnb.com / www.errorrecords.com / www.unioncrew.org . I got tired of cube life and had to make a change. I also do some graphics work and development for some local lawyers.

Now I operate my own record label and promote drum and bass events in my local city of St. Louis ;)

With my stupid little web quiz thingey, the domain name one should not be a question. I have just seen them for around $30 the most. Now though, there are lots of people who are offering them cheaper.

With the IMG SRC one, IMG SRC is the correct code for an image. I asked for the image code, not for a proper file extension.

I just write intranet apps for my company. My site design skills leave something to be desired. But if you lay the site out (how it looks) heh I can write the backend and mechanics for it :)

I created a php app that my company sells. I'm the project manager for it and we have several big clients. I make $59k.

I do contract work occationally at $75/hour.

I also have a personal website, http://db.etree.org. This site currently gets over 6 million hits/month.

I'd say I make what a c++ programmer does, but only because I'm very good at programming php. I had some guy email me recently asking if I wanted help...his rate was $8/hour. I emailed him back a list of advanced questions and never heard from him again.

I've worked for the same London based consultancy for 3 years now. All that time I've been coding PHP, though they started doing Coldfusion so I moved over more into unix admin.

We had to add CF to our LAPP server, and one of the higher ups wanted to know why we weren't "exploiting" more CF since it cost us $3500 a year. we explained that it's hard to write good code in, and we had tons fo working code examples in PHP. The only reason we added CF was to stage content for another site that used CF, and we had no real plans to code in it if possible.

Funny how, if you think about it, if we had started coding in CF we would have been locking out group into a $3500 a year license so we could justify our $3500 a year license. I just don't get people some times.
