Some sites show your hostname (privacy.net or http://www.tehbox.com/me/). When I look at a website's stats I see hostname next to ip. Usually most IPs look like user 10-2-3-42.provider.net. However, sometimes I get hust USER or MACHINE_9 and stuff like that.
So how is it possible to change the hostname to something like PHPUSER?

Hi.
That looks like the machine name is being written into the weblogs.
The machine name is set in the Network identity section in Windows. In Linux, it is in the system configuration somewhere (/etc/rc.config perhaps?) and is indeed called the host name.
You can change your own host name, on your own machine but you cannot change anyone elses.
If you are using NT4, I would not recommend changing the machine name unless you know exactly what you are doing as it can seriously mess up the system services.
Hope that helps.
Neil.
