Can anyone offer advise for a server/php novice?

I am wondering which setup is most stable for just a home server meant for testing that will occasionally be open to the internet, possibly for days at some times. I have a dsl connection and run zonealarm as a firewall.

I have been able to setup Apache 2.0.40 with PHP 4.2.2 successfully, but am concerned still about security. Would I be better off and more secure and safe with Apache 1.3.6 with PHP 4.2.2 or another combination.

All replies welcome.

PS running Win2k SP3

You would probably be better off with the latest PHP (just now PHP 4.2.3, released today) and Apache 1.3.26 than you would apache 2.x as PHP with apache 2.x is still experimental and you would run in to problems. Just be sure to use common sense when setting up apache and php, don't leave any holes open and keep your antivirus up to date as well as your firewall.

I agree with dotwebbie.

By the way, ZoneAlarm is a good choice. It is also much more configurable if you buy it.
There are a few other good ones out there too but ZA was my choice.
I also use AVG antivirus. (from grisoft.com) It is free and pretty much on the ball.
