Migration from php 4.0.6 to the latest stable

Hi ,

I'm running a productive server and because of several reasons I've to migrate to the latest stable.
Because many homepages are on this server I've to be very careful.

Where are the basic differences between the versions?
What errors and problems I've to expect?

I can't find some release guide, but the most important thing is, that since PHP 4.2.0 for security reasons by default register_globals is set to off.
