Hi,
I wanted to host my website on my own computer, but I do not know what to do about the DNS for my domain. I know there are some free ones like www.zonedit.com and www.granitecanyon.com but are there any free DNS registers to host my own DNS server? What would you guys reccommand? Thanks in advanced

I don't know much about it, but dyndns.com (or org, or...) might help.

You could also set up a 333MHz (any cheap old machine) between you and the world and install Linux and run everything, with firewall and routing. A 100 MHz pentium running Linux is rumoured to be able to sturate a T1, so you will be able to serve up quite a bit.

I heard a 486 could push a T-1 to the limit but this is assuming you are running a site that has 0 scripting. ;) If running PHP, a 333MHz will probably do well. Of course, you could get a 1GHz machine these day for a few hundred but make sure you have some hard drive redundancy or back-ups, losing data obviously sucks.

As jstarkey says www.dyndns.org is one option. I've used it for about 4 years now and have found the service great, I've used it for websites/email to my dialup and also for static websites so they could have a proper hostname.

They also provide free clients so that you can run servers on dynamic IP addresses (e.g. modem dialups or cheaper broadband isps).

All in all pretty damn good for a free organisation. There are a few others around but dyndns seems to have more domains, although this might have changed now.

If you're not sure what you need post back, DNS can be a very confusing system. Basically you sign up for an account at dyndns, pick a hostname, set it to your computers IP address, then add that hostname to your apache/IIS configuration.
