PHP Error while trying to MAKE

We are trying to run Red Hat 8.0 and Apache 2.0.44 and PHP 4.3.1

Here is the config command i used.

./configure --with-apxs2=/usr/local/apache2/bin/apxs --with-mysql

it configures fine... but

Here is the error i get when i try to make php.

ext/ctype/ctype.lo: file not recognized: File truncated
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
make: *** [libphp4.la] Error 1

I'm about to rip my ears off!!! Any help is greatly appreciated.
