There are two possibilities:

1) Your hard drive is SO OLD, that it uses a deprecated ATAPI protocol. conclusion: USELESS.

2) Check if you've set master/slave correct. Most drives don't handle cable select well...

3) Try a new IDE cable.

4) Try to kick it ;-)

Your slave (most likely cd-rom) isn;t compatible with ATAPI...) this is common on old units or CHEKC THE IDE CABLE.. make sure the end with the longer ribbon is plugged to the motherboard and the shorter ribbon (with two connectors) is plugged to your hd and cd-rom... If you have no cd-rom or second hd.. go into bios, click standard, and set the Secondary IDE1 settings and the IDE2 settings to Not Installed instead of Auto..
