California is a big place. It's about 1000 miles up & down, and over 400 miles left to right in many places. Favorite places for me (in no particular order) are:
San Diego Zoo / Wild Animal Park
Magic Mountain
Hwy 395 from Bishop to Reno
Lake Tahoe
Hwy 49 through the Gold Country
Fisherman's Wharf in SF
Hwy 1 from San Luis Obispo to Santa Cruz
Napa Valley
Mt Shasta
Trinity Alps area
Death Valley (pretty hot right now!)
Sequoia/Kings Canyon/Yosemite parks
Bodega Bay
Lassen park

My first picks would be yosemite and death valley but in august yosemite falls are about dry (great at snow melting season) and death valley, well, i've been there in august in 1992 and DAMN IT'S HOT but worth every degree
Then you have...:
golden gate park on a sunny sunday (SFO)
Venice beach (LAX)
La Hoja (San Diego)
Russian River
MOMA in SFO (everyone tells me it's the best, like I care :P )
Stinson Beach (101 north from san francisco exit about 10 miles north right before san raphael if memory serves)

oh and marine world africa USA if you're with kids :D
Universal studios/Disney are nice too if you like lines and creative patience practice.

hi & thanks a lot for your ideas, i appreciate.
i have been to magic mountain and sequoia park last year, so i will try to visit some of the other places you 2 suggested.
i like that highway ideas much... just driving and looking around. i've printed your suggestions out and will definately take them with me. probably i am going to visit yosemite and lake tahoe...
i just read some lines about stinson beach (@bunker: memory serves well) and decided to combine that with a weekend in san fransico, including the sunny sunday in golden gate park. i also 'googled' some information about the MuseumOfModernArts, looks interesting. i think san fransico will be a long weekend.
i hope to find time to see san diego and even cross the border to mexico, maybe before i leave from lax.
if there is somebody out there knowing about some good live-music locations, pleeeez post or pm...!!!
regards...

The recently redone Getty museum isn't too far from LAX. I haven't been there but it's supposed to be very nice.

I'll be on my merry way to Sydney on Friday...
Any tourist things to do ?
(Apart from the bridge climb, opera house, centre point tower - already planned :-) )

Wow, I am envious. I am from the Bay Area, and miss it. Used to live in Reno, too -- you definitely need to visit Tahoe.
If you are spending time in SF, there are obvious tourist places to go -- Fisherman's Wharf, Golden Gate Park, etc. You should also try to go to the Palace of Fine Arts. If you like science, there is a museum there called the Exploratorium that's a lot of fun -- all hands-on exhibits, built mostly by scientists and science classes in the Bay Area. Worth the trip, believe me. If you are travelling far north, a trip to Mt. Shasta (and Lake Shasta) is very nice, too. You can travel through Napa Valley, and stop at a few wineries for tours and wine-tasting :)
