Not a rant really but...does anyone remeber when they very first got into programming?

I remember I was in 7th grade and I wanted to make a game as a project for my aviation class. I had no idea how such things worked (but I was still much more tech savvy than anyone I knew). I remember I asked my math teacher (who happened to teach QBasic also) what I should use to make a small airplane game. So I got home and started on making this game with QBasic. Everything went fairly well until I got to the part where I was going to make graphics. I made a plane graphic (by using a color grid, different number for each pixel). It was then I realized that QBasic sucks.

I remember those days... it was back when after reading the first page of a book.... you already knew more than your teacher... but hell for the first.... ~3-4 years of programming... I never had anyone to ask questions... no internet... no programming savvy people at school... just books, testing, and DEBUGGING to learn from...

one of those truely "self taught" people :D

OHHH OHHH OHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

Look mommieeeeeee! A rant!

I will learn to search! (http://www.phpbuilder.com/board/showthread.php?s=&threadid=10256907) :D

Why cant people SEARCH before asking... especially when its NON PHP!?!?!?

n00854180t

Why, because tekky, people want you to answer their questions on demand. Why search when you can just get someone to answer you directly. It takes so much less effort for them.

my first program was a war dialer. I was in sixth grade and five of us got our hands on a unix server and some dumbterminals when the school upgraded their equipment.

My second program was a driver for the scan tron reader at school, did I mention that I was an honor role student?

New rant: anti-JavaScript newbies

There are newbies who say that they want to do something in PHP that can be more easily done in JavaScript. They even post JavaScript code that they want to turn into PHP. It makes me mad.

There are anti-JavaScript newbies cuz you can turn JS off...and you can't turn PHP off...

And any control you give to the client is more control you take away from your scripts...

the problem with JS is that I DO NOT CONTROL THE CLIENT it's that simple. Different browsers use different versions and all kinds of stuff. If I can keep it server side I do.

... i have to disagree

JavaScript is the other side of PHP.

It's designed not to give you the control over client operation, (any language that do it on client side, isn't a language, is a trojan...) but for interact with him.

And so i find REALLY useless disable the JavaScript on your pc...

drawmack
10-10-2003, 08:07 AM
But it does allow you to program trojans. If they took out all the functionality that can be abused they would take out all the funcitonality.

I DIDN'T say it wasn't useless, but people do it to circumvent everyones javascript error checking, form validation, etc...

Good luck turning off PHP :D

This is the point. I'm saing
"You disable JavaScript ? I can't validate your form and if there is any error you'll get at the next page. If you don't want three pages loaded for a missing '@' let be JavaScript enabled. Else you pay for three pages load time."

And i do the same test on var in php too, JS or not JS.

(an example from phpbuilder: go at your pm page, don't check any msg and click "delete"... it load a page to tells you "you don't have checked nothing". Then you go back at pm page. Three page Vs a simple javascript (enabled or not).)

And so if people want "turn off" PHP, just don't load the page with ".php" extension. (myself, some time, when i look .asp press stop.)

/me wear red/blue stretch tights and fly to save JS :D

Ops, i'm a bit OT...

I want rant for the guys who post for regexp and don't wan't find it self the right solution !!!

true but when you've been trying all day...

(should have seen me yesterday trying to get a damn eregi() function working! GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR - finally got it matching AS I was being relieved from work, so great timing but still frustrating!)

10-14-2003, 12:40 PM
Indeed I know what you mean. It took me a damned long time to engineer a solution for my cart script that was looping strangely. Finally I put it in another loop with a conditional to break from the loops and that worked.

LordShryku
10-14-2003, 12:40 PM
Frustrated I understand....

Maybe a lil careful wording, and less use of caps could have done him better. Internet language isn't that hard to grasp.
All caps = Yelling.

n00854180t
10-14-2003, 01:16 PM
Yes that is one thing that is pretty much agreed on. If you are using all caps it is 1) annoying and 2) (can be) offensive. You don't use all capitals when you write a letter, and you shouldn't when you ask for help either.

Up a stepladder pulling down display stand components from shelves. Misjudged the mass of one suitcase when I yanked on it, got it free of the shelf, then wished I hadn't.

I'll make it perfectly clear, soapy frogs were not involved at all (http://www.phpbuilder.com/board/showthread.php?s=&postid=10431001#post10431001).

(needless to say, this from a senior luser who wouldn't know a "standard" if it married his firstborn.) Well, it's "standard equipment" on so many, many machines.

But, it's not standard (read: up to specs), it doesn't comply with standards (read: you know that even better than I do), and the "standard" they are "lifting" doesn't say much for the future of the race.

<font> tags. C'mon people! They've been obsolete since last century. Last millennium, even. There's no browser in the world today that recognises fonts at all but doesn't know what to do with a font style, so what's your excuse?

And something I've learned when trying to help people: never make two suggestions. If you do, they'll start reading, see the first suggestion, try it, and if it doesn't work they'll immediately tell you as much ( "Doesnt work :(") and that's it. All of the other suggestions you made probably didn't even get past their retinas. Next day, they'll bump.

Which editors are good? <my take>C'Mon folks. When I first started, I googled until I found my answer. If you're too freakin stupid or lazy to google something like this, then why bother to even try to learn PHP.</mytake>

I have a junior "tech guy" who is learning, slowly. Probably the fact that he's in college 3 days a week doesn't help, BION.

So the other day we wanted to migrate my wife's box from a 20GB to a 120GB HDD. "Ok, Bob. Set up WinXP Home on this 120GB drive, install MS Backup on both it and the 120GB HDD from the XPH CD, and we'll do a backup and restore from the 20 to the 120 when I get back."

When I get back, he's finishing up the "Files and Settings Transfer Wizard". (Did I mention FAST in all that above?). Whatever he did, he got things so that the 20GB was F:/, the 120 was C:/, and the machine wouldn't boot without BOTH drives in place. Registry was full of references to F:\some\path\to\important\stuff.

'Twas a very Good Thing that I'd got up early and stuck it in the server - `cp -Rp /mnt /backup/house/` ... but it took me a freakin' hour and a half to figure out what in the world to do to fix it..... grrrrr...

And then, to top it, I did the restore, and now the 120GB bluescreens every time.

Bob should work for Microsoft. ;)

Heh, I'm on a *remote* location ATM.

Besides, he's only in office 9-5 on Tuesday. Thursday he's on "field duty", which lately has consisted of mowing the grounds and digging holes or carrying stuff for my wife. And the rest of the time he's in college. I hope he learns how to code soon; I'm getting up to my ears in projects again.

Maybe I just need to get off my chair (and the forums) and get busy...

On a somewhat related note, yesterday I met with the "Assistant Director" and the "Director" of a granted agency near here. The Director I'd not met before; interesting to talk to --- lives in Missouri, but grew up in Wales and spent most of her life so far in Australia.

And the funny thing; they want me to do a "intraweb" app for them ... but they have a guy with a 4-year CS degree on staff. I guess his job is just to help the secretaries with their Word docs and Outlook attachments?

<heh, lucky turkey, him. That stuff is cake.....>

Okay, so this is the second old thread I've dug up so far this week, but it's apropos here.

Not so much a rant at the moment, more a puzzling observation.

Is it my imagination or is it observer bias or is it truly the case that especially dumb posts come through in waves? I mean, their lips are moving but I can't make out a single thing that they're saying. Or when I can, it's just someone wanting a handout.

Perhaps you could call it a vociferation, diatribe, philippic, rave, or tirade. I think I would go with vociferation.

AAMOF, "Bob" did a real good job a week or two ago. I was out of town, 6 hours away, and got a call from my oldest (first) client --- financial database machine is down. I figure I know what's up, called "Bob" and told him to get down there on it. He did, it was fixed, and I enjoyed my "away" visit.
