Shrike 01-09-2004, 10:45 AM Hmm I never read this forum until now. /waves. :) dalecosp 01-09-2004, 11:25 AM /me waves back.... :D bubblenut 01-09-2004, 11:28 AM /waves and shouts "THANK YOU" from all the way over in the coding forum :D piersk 01-09-2004, 11:52 AM /me bows theatrically in greeting LordShryku 01-09-2004, 12:06 PM /me wonders why everyone uses /me for suggested actions. This isn't IRC. /me welcomes you to the EL :D Shrike 01-09-2004, 12:09 PM Haven't you ever seen something in the office and thought "LOL" :D I'm still waiting for the day I say it out loud though. That day I emigrate to Antarctica ;) LordShryku 01-09-2004, 12:39 PM Actually, I have had those thoughts, and almost said it a couple times. I'll see ya in Antartica.... dalecosp 01-09-2004, 01:01 PM Originally posted by LordShryku /me wonders why everyone uses /me for suggested actions. This isn't IRC. I think I first noticed Bunkermaster using this IRC convention here on the forums; at least on this particular forum. Frankly, it's a fine convention for expressing a physical action; an alternative to graphic illustration, for example. If we did it Piersk's way, we'd all have to run for the digicam, wave with one hand while holding it with the other, upload the photo to webspace, etc., etc...... :D piersk 01-09-2004, 01:04 PM Huh?? What do you mean digicam?? When did I do this? LordShryku 01-09-2004, 01:05 PM And I've already lost my camera again, so no way :D I've seen other ways though. Doing it on IRC simply appends a *Username does something, so another way I've seen is just using *Does Something* bubblenut 01-09-2004, 01:10 PM Hand my_hand = new Hand('mine'); my_hand.wave(); dalecosp 01-09-2004, 01:12 PM Originally posted by piersk Huh?? What do you mean digicam?? When did I do this? When we use "/me actions", we're expressing an action that cannot be seen via the Internet, a physical gesture or motion etc., such as waving, passing a drink, smacking with a LART, etc. This is a substitute for visual illustration --- a cartoon of me passing you a beer, a photo of Elizabeth smacking Buzzly with a clue stick, etc. Recently you started a thread (I didn't mind the thread, I was just pointing it out and picking on you a lil' bit) of self-portraits, as it were; photographs of those of us trapped here in our daily existence (or whatever :D ) and so I chose to use it as an example. Nothing personal, I assure you. dalecosp 01-09-2004, 01:14 PM Originally posted by bubblenut Hand my_hand = new Hand('mine'); my_hand.wave(); Hmm, Object Oriented Posting... !! :D piersk 01-09-2004, 01:28 PM Nah, I was just curious to see what everyone looked like. I quite like the idea of doing emoticons and actions using a digital camera... shame im still at work... Elizabeth 01-09-2004, 01:31 PM Welcome Shrike, glad to have you amongst the mutually wacky. FWIW, I always preferred the "<---" method of defining one's action, as in the olden days of the chat room. Elizabeth: <--- says hi I think it must be the grammatical incorrectness to using "/me does something" that bugs me a little. But hey, whatever. I'm easy. -Elizabeth piersk 01-09-2004, 01:35 PM There shouldn't be any gramatical problems, cos usually if you put (for example): /me waves then the IRC program changes it to: piersk waves doesn't it? It may look funny on here tho... I know in YABBSE there is a bit of code, so if you typed: waves it would change it to: *Piers waves Elizabeth 01-09-2004, 01:38 PM Yes Piers, I am a very visual person so when I see /me waves, it makes me think of Tarzan. dalecosp 01-09-2004, 01:43 PM /me grunts /me grabs Elizabeth and swings off to jungle hideaway... too late Piersk! It's an underdog upset! :D :D Elizabeth 01-09-2004, 01:47 PM <--- laughs at dalecosp trying to carry a very pregnant woman from vine to vine <--- glances below for some nice soft underbrush for my emergency landing dalecosp 01-09-2004, 01:52 PM ROFL! I forgot, I guess! Hmm, 21st century jungle --- steel rope vines!! Hey, don't worry, it'll be over in a scant few months ... then you'll lose sleep for a different reason! bubblenut 01-09-2004, 01:54 PM Through the warm, bustling throng of the Echo Lounge Bubble nut saw someone he had not seen in here before waving at him, someone that he recognised but not from within these four walls. "Where have I seen that face before?" Suddenly it hit him, he'd seen him in one of the club's other rooms; it was the same person who had helped him erlier that very day. Bubblenut's hand shot into the air and waved vigorously, welcoming Shrike to the Echo Lounge. Gramatically correct but a little long winded prehapse. Elizabeth 01-09-2004, 02:00 PM ... and quite eloquent, bubblenut! You're bringing a sense of class to the EL. (hey wait- cut that out!) ;) piersk 01-09-2004, 03:22 PM Originally posted by Elizabeth You're bringing a sense of class to the EL. (hey wait- cut that out!) ;) Yeah, what do you think this place is? Weedpacket 01-09-2004, 11:01 PM I finally find the keys to the drinks bar. "So, Shrike, will you be having anything?" Before waiting for an answer I grab myself a bottle of schnapps and a short time later I'm sliding under the table - a place that I feel offers the best acoustics for a rendition of "Only You". Elizabeth 01-09-2004, 11:05 PM Weed, I'll give you a dollar if you sing "Dancin' Queen" instead. Weedpacket 01-09-2004, 11:19 PM Originally posted by Elizabeth Weed, I'll give you a dollar if you sing "Dancin' Queen" instead. Umm, I'll do it if you give me the lyrics, and hum a tad of the verse as that one's a tad old and I've forgotten the tune.... Keyboard, guitar, a capella? Or should I mix a track? BuzzLY 01-10-2004, 05:28 AM Originally posted by dalecosp ... a photo of Elizabeth smacking Buzzly with a clue stick, etc... Elizabeth has never smacked me with a clue stick. Get your facts straight. Fortunately they have this wonderful 'adopt an animal' program. The adoption can be a day or month. Orangutanns eat light at $.75 a day or $22.50 a month, and for $15 a day or $450 a month you get yourself an entire elephant. Double that and you can probably have his name changed to Clyde. Triple it and I bet they will let you dye him pink. Visitation rights come with any adoption. The flyer is on my office door -- 5321.
