For those that are going to take photos of your bedroom, I suggest closing the curtains so the outside view does not show whereabouts you are.

Also, I (and I'm sure Jupiter media) take no responsibility for any contravening of company rules in posting photos etc etc

Nope, both each on stock stand(s). One of these days I might get adjustable/robo arms for each of them (free up actual desk footprint), but that's far down the list. Before I even bother with arms, I need to get something new to feed the screens, probably a Nvidia FX 5700 Ultra or Matrox Parhelia (using 1 AGP, 1 PCI FX5200 currently)

For some reason, the XP boxen (wife's) in the house doesn't want to see the thing. Fix it? Yeah, sure, after the big pile of machines over there on the bench ... and the three or four new sites, and warehouse app...

Is that one of the dummy books i see on the bookshelf.
dalecosp
04-26-2004, 01:52 AM
Nope, you see at least two of 'em ... you didn't know I was a "Dummy"??
UNIX for dummies was about two bucks, I couldn't resist. Didn't find much I wasn't already acquainted with, but makes a fun read, as opposed to, say, McKusick's "Design and Implementation of the 4.4BSD Operating System".... ;)
C for dummies was about five, IIRC, and I picked it up when I found myself getting bored with K&R. Made it through the whole thing in a day or two, and then found that it was equivalent to about one, maybe one and a half chapters of K&R; so I suppose it was only good for entertainment value.
Other books on that shelf include Larry Ullman's "PHP for the World Wide Web", Elizabeth Castro's Javascript tome from the same series, Welling/Thomson's "PHP and MySQL Web Development", K&R 2nd ed., and somebody's copy of "Using FrontPage 2000". I think it belongs to a defunct ISP I used to run the mailserver for. I've just purchased Leon Atkinson/Zeev Suraski's "Core PHP 5 Programming" --- great for the direct history of the project, thoughts behind development, etc., but the main portion of the text is basically just another take on the PHP Manual. It might not be fair to judge it on that section, because there are three more, but section two is the biggest part of the book....
I think that's about all of the programming books I have that were written since the Internet became public knowledge ... the rest are in another barn :D

About to get a remodel, this is the future home of the stuff I do. It's a little old cottage/garage at the back of our new place. New roof, new windows, new floor, new heating, new electrical coming. Enough comfy space for three or four people, a small kitchen and bathroom and a gigantic work table for everything that can be imagined.

Not even close :p Seriously, 1 small room + 2 computers + 3 printers(don't even use two, should get rid of them) + cable modem + 2 routers(both suck..) + 5.1 speakers + stereo + tv + couple hundred CD's(music and computer) + Wires everywhere(fire hazard?) + crap loads of old floppies(don't even know why they are still here) + LOTS of books(got them on clearance) + papers everywhere + boxes from software and games(Those cheap games that only run on old computers like mine) + couple filing cabinets + office supplies everywhere + 2 office chair(1 executive like new one, and an old crapper) + a chair that belongs in the living room = one messy room. And that isn't near all the crap in here. Plus factor in most of the stuff is really old, so it is much bigger than it needs to be. Oh and every wall has a desk(3 of them) or big crap holding thing against it to make the room even smaller seeming topped off with shelfs covering one of the walls(above a desk). Oh and a binary clock my brother made :D
hehe, hoped that help draw a picture in your mind about this room.

Yes, it's true, but at least lately I get to play with .NET at work, so it's not as intolerable :D
ASP does pay the bills, PHP jobs are few and far between. Heck, we're moving into our new house shortly--ASP work paying for a good portion :D
Preemptive calming: Note to PHP vs. .NET vs. whatever holy-war participants -- I'm comparing ASP.NET/VB.NET/C# to vanilla ASP, not PHP. Both PHP and .NET have their individual strong and weak points, so let's not go there :D

Found the infamous "$e-mail" typo(s) yet? Gotta love when people further down the chain of production have word auto-correct turned on. :P

Not yet, and if I find any typos, you will definately hear bout it
On another note, I was deeply saddened to see that there was no acknowledgement to me. I expect to see one in the next edition (when's it due out?) :p

It might be one of those animated gifs that, after a short period of time, shows people who have been horiffically mutilated, causing you to jump, spilling your Dr Pepper over your PC which the explodes in a huge fireball...

If they were generous enough to give us a bunch of books, I would be happy to give you a copy. Unfortunately, they only gave us 5, which isn't even enough to give to some of my closest real world friends. Maybe we can hold out for more copies when we write the PHP5 revision... :D

There is a book missing from your collection. Please remedy the situation and reshoot the picture.

My desk (http://mng.starport.org/images/home.jpg)
The laptop's usually out front with me for all my "casual" stuff. Desk is really only used for gaming and work (when I'm not at work).
