Hi guys,
i recently created a website for a restaurant that consists of about 5 or six pages with an admin system to allow the updating of selected content. They have asked me to give them a reasonable price to sell it to them but i have no idea how much to sell it for (from the UK so its £). I also need to make quite a few changed if it is to be W3C validated. Can anyone give me some guideance on this?
any help apprecated

That's quite a hard question - similar to how long is a piece of string.
Think about the length of time you spent on the code, how rich the restaurant is likely to be, and if you can find out, the average rates for web dev houses in the area. As an example my company charges around £100 per hour for software dev. London companies probably charge a bit more. Of course if it's just you doing the work you probably won't be able to charge that kind of money.
You might also want to consider whether the company is likely to give you lots of work in the future.
Finally, always agree a price before you do any work ;)

i see the problem, i meanits hard to say how long it took me but if you take a look at the site it might give you a better idea of how much work it took (not that much on the main site really):
The Site (http://www.sutty.f2s.com)
It has an admin section which allows the updating of menu content which cannot be accessed from the main site, the booking system will not be used as yet.
It was just me involved, i just need a resasonable ball park figure, im sorry i know the difficulty of the situation.

Well like I said it really depends on the person/company doing the work and the person/company who is paying. There doesn't seem to be much complexity there, I'd estimate about 2-3 days to design and build so perhaps around £2-300 ?
Complete guesswork though ;)

I charge £150/day freelance. The company I work for charges about £500/day for my time. Looking at the site, I'd say you should charge them around £300 - £400...

wow, i was unaware that it cost that much. Im probably going to ask them to get quotes from other people and ill do them a cheap rate compared to what other people offer, or ill just say £100-£150 maybe. It needs some redevelopment so i think that might be ok.
I think im a bit naive with pricing for web designing at the moment, i have alot to learn.
Thanks for all your advice, really appreciated

I think that probably happens to everyone who starts out on their own. I charged £2,500 for the first project I did on my own, which I thought was totally great. Then 3 months later when it was finally live it became clear that I had undercharged, by quite alot ;)

You might want to agree on how much maintenance should cost.
Judging from what others have posted, maybe £220 with £30 for each minor maintenance session, and a new contract if they want a major upgrade?
If they request for a price breakdown you can always say £25 per public page (7 of them?), with £45 for the backend.
Either way, it looks pretty cheap.
Later, once you have a portfolio of such websites as this one, you can start to up the price confidently.

The trick is to be affordable and competetive without seeming "cheap". The last thing you want to do is sell yourself cheap, because the next thing you know, their friends are asking their friends, and you are doing twice as much work with half as much pay.
There is a lot to be said for the "You get what you pay for" adage, and if you seem "cheap" to clients, they may not see your work as being as professional as the more costly ones. It's a balancing act depending on the client.

I charged http://www.blvdcars.com $500USD. I do alot of work for them, 2 sites and several eBay auctions for cars. So I try to not charge them too much, to keep money coming to me.
But it is different for everyone.
If they can acutally take reservations and orders online, then I would charge them more than what your asking.

Let me just say from experiance. You would be very surprised at what people are willing to pay for web design and programming. Look at this way, any type of programming isn't going to be a do-it yourself type job. Sure they probably could get by with doing the HTML part themselves, but in the long run it will just cost the company more. Basically what the boils down to...Your time is very valueable. Just make sure they know that. Without going to crazy!

i sold a website once for 599 euros (about 599 usd at the time)
www.projectwinkel.nl it took me quite some work and i put out a contract for them to update it regularly
limited by some rules i've i do updates once a month for 35 euros per update... contracted PER year, paid in advance :)
Seems kinda weird, but they bought it anyway :D
as you see the website is quite simple though, plain html and some photoediting and graphixdesigns... (logo etc.)
now im developing the same websites but in php and make an offer depending on the budget of the person who orders... starting from a minimum wage ive set per package i offer :)
*reads this over and thinks "damn i wrote this complicated"* :D:confused:
