I don't pay attention to much other than a few message boards, the php main site, and my own php tinkerings. I would be interested to know what magazines, websites, physical gatherings, mailing lists etc that others think are useful in the quest toward becoming a php master.

i don't really look elsewhere for php stuff, apart from here and php.net - oh, and www.evilwalrus.com

there is a list of sites i check daily, and i get inspiration from these

wvs.topleftpixel.com - a photoblog of amazing shots
www.tcimh.com - drawings of cartoon creatures, a new one each day
www.fazed.net - collection of cool links etc

Well, too much to list here I think.
I do have a recent dump of my (somewhat daily) feed list (OPML format) from one of my RSS readers for those who feel like reading some raw XML.

Here you go (OPML/XML) (http://www.goldendance.com/NewsDesk_Channels.opml)

hmmm thats quite a bit of daily wanderings from some of you. How about publications though. Any php journals, or magazines, or user groups that you find helpful?

I thought I had already posted this...weird.

In addition to this place, the manual, Google and stalking Weedpacket (not really) I also pay attention to the new tutorials and scipts over at codewalkers.com. They are served up in my email and over the months a few things have come along that were really interesting.

I check my e-mail addresses, and I go to

www.kingdomofloathing.com
forums.mozillazine.org
www.nationstates.net
www.phpbuilder.com/board

I also check out the RSS feeds from php.net, MozillaZine, and mozilla.org

I guess the only places I go for php-ness are here and php.net (not phpzen!)

I also check my virtual calendar everyday...wow...I feel like a total nerd.

I don't check out all those sites everyday. Just the ones I feel like visiting/have time to visit.

Since installing thunderbird 0.8 I do most of my "keeping up to date" through RSS feeds. Ones which I subscribe to which have not already been mentioned are as follows.

sitepoint.com - web design & development
devshed.com - Open source development
freshmeat.net - Project Releases
NewsForge - Opensource & Linux News
Guardian Unlimited UK Latest - UK Newspaper
Guardian Unlimited World Latest - "
The Register - Tech News
Indymedia - Because I'm a whinging liberal :p

Hope some of these tickle the fancy of some of you as well.

What's the difference between FreshMeat and SourceForge?

I think that SF is a site for the development of software, whereas FW is a download repository

There's not really much of a difference between Sourceforge and Freshmeat, but Sourceforge seems to have more software projects, and Freshmeat seems to have more application extensions and themes. Also, a lot of projects on Freshmeat seem to have an external homepage. Like piersk said, it's kind of like a download repository.

i know i seem to keep repeating myself, but other than online resources.... does anyone go to or find use from *gasp* actual physical gatherings where ppl discuss php, like a local user group or something... i don't hear much discussion about those

Yea, I went to PHPLondon in September ad I thouht it was really good. It was quite a surprise to see that some relatively normal people use PHP, after hanging around here. ;)

I think im going to trying to attend some meetup.com mettings for php and webdevelopers next month (Nov 2004) so if anyone else in the Northern Virginia or Washington DC area feels like attending it would be cool to find other phpbuilders there...

hey goldbug, are these meetings actually fun/useful, do you have an opinion on them?

Hehe, no, I didn't have nearly as much *fun* at PHPLondon but it was quite usefull. What's going on about the next PHPBuilder meetup? Did we ever sort anything out?

/me goes to find the proper thread for this kind of talk

They're usually pretty fun... when they actually happen. Locally, at least, we have a problem with attendance, so it's rare when they actually happen, and when they do, it usually ends up being Elizabeth, BuzzLY, and myself, and occasionally someone else. YMMV :)

Yes, and then for some reason these "others" never want to come back. Hmmmm... I even tried curbing my dancing on the tabletops, but it doesn't seem to help.
