Has anyone played round with Laszlo (http://www.laszlosystems.com) ??

Ironcially, I found out about this opensource RIA (Rich Internet Applications) technology at a Coldfusion showcase of Flex and blackstone. Exactly why they felt the need to tell the usergroup about the opensource competition, is beyond me but I'm glad they did! Flex looks awesome but it costs!

Some demos of possible Laszlo applications here: (http://www.laszlosystems.com/demos/)

Just stumbled across this last night in a magazine. So I searched thru the boards here to see if any of us lot hadbeen playing around with it. It looks really sweet. I just need to think of a decent application for it :)

Ah, so this isn't flex (http://www.hmug.org/man/1/flex.php) we're talking about....

Yeah - the Laszlo project is moving on nicely..

The solo (standalone) applications are most interesting for me at present as I dont yet have a web host that meets the requirements to compile and serve Laszlo content on the fly..

I also need an application where this approach is suitable!

Heres a commerical application - specifically their colour chooser:

My company signed up for a Macromedia Flex web presentation, where a 'MM' guy took us through the in's and out's of Flex. My overall impression was that it would be really good at making Flash applications which all look the same - I hope it's progressed a bit from there in terms of customisation.

Since when has SLOW meant advanced?

I've been wondering if Flash and it's associated technologies will get less resources from Adobe. Macromedia never made a dime from the whole Flash thing. I'd sort of hate to see it evaporate, but I still don't find it friendly enough to use - 99% of all Flash sites I visit just annoy me (as I'm sure they do most people).

We looked at Laszlo for the calendaring system when I was working on the campaign, but it was too slow and I think there was a hefty license fee (but I can't remember this part now). In the end, we didn't even do a calendar...

I got bored waiting for the demos to load. Lemme play with XUL a bit more...

Yeah - their servers suck and are slow...

But its opensource and free! The demos are good once loaded...

The big ones certainly annoy me, but I've learned over the past couple of years that a lot of sites have flash elemnts subtly included into their site for navigation, dynamic content delivery etc... and those tend to be very easy to use.

I haven't experienced the same problem as others here with regard to how long it takes the demos to load. The sample dashboard (http://www.laszlosystems.com/lps/sample-apps/dashboard/dashboard.lzo?lzt=html) is very impressive.

I agree - I find it more interesting than anything else.

The way the company I work for is we try to build web applications - I think Laszlo and some of the DHTML (openrico.org) solutions are showing a trend towards richer web applications...

It'll be interesting to see what comes of it..
