Which Forum

Hi,

Can anyone recommend a good free (php/mysql) forum for use on a friends site ?

I would have to hack the security and styles - but dont know whichforum / bb to pick?

Anyone done this and got any advice / experience they want to share?

I use PHPBB (www.phpbb.com) for my board (http://www.ultimatespin.com), and was able to customize it fairly easily. I did a bit of research before I picked it, but of course your preferences are most likely different than mine.

If you decide to go with them, they have a very good community that can help you with customization issues, as well as user-created themes you can implement. It's a very well-supported product, and best of all, it's OS!

vBulletin is very excellent.

but, In China, many people use "discuz".

It's very fast and work easy.

It's applied for us.

E.g: this forum online user over 5,000, but the speed is very fast however.

I guess it means:
This forum software is adjusted to work in chinese language.

To make a message board with language options is quite alright to do with most languages.
Those who use arabic alphabet as backbone and write from left to right.
But it is a very different matter to write a version for language
that does written language in other ways.
Chinese system for writing chinese, is VERY different.

http://www.discuz.com/ message board
is designed to ' be applied' by chinese users.
It is an application that conforms to chinese standard.

The mean is, "there are enough function, without extra parts."

In China, may be 60% use "discuz", 30% use "phpwind", the other is "vBulletin" or "phpBB".
