Click to See Complete Forum and Search --> : Oooooo.... Prretty! BuzzLY 07-08-2005, 12:30 PM It's gonna take a little time to get used to, I think, but it looks nice. And finally, the text box looks much better in Firefox! pohopo 07-08-2005, 01:23 PM at first i thought the different look was the result of little sleep and a hangover  i will need a week to absorb all the changes to say if i think it is better. (not that it matters) davidjam 07-08-2005, 01:25 PM My initial response, was hey this is clean and nice, but now I think it looks a cluttered (if not junky). I guess what I always liked about phpb is that it's look was so unpretentious compared to the slick 3-d forums around, AND yet it has one of the best communities... Check out the smilies... hey! where is my favorite just plain old "mr smiles"? ... oh, there he is! :) Vbabiy 07-08-2005, 01:36 PM Hey this new Forum is great i like the Javascript dropdown really nice UPGRADE :D goldbug 07-08-2005, 01:40 PM My initial response, was hey this is clean and nice, but now I think it looks a cluttered (if not junky). I guess what I always liked about phpb is that it's look was so unpretentious compared to the slick 3-d forums around, AND yet it has one of the best communities... Check out the smilies... hey! where is my favorite just plain old "mr smiles"? ... oh, there he is! :) I'll second the cluttered comment. I'm probably just not used to the new icons or layout, but it's definitely "bigger" on the thread/forum listings, causing unnecessary scrolls (imho). Plus, putting the poster's info above each post by default only slows down the read speed of each thread :( drew010 07-08-2005, 01:49 PM looks like some good did come out of all that downtime last night. very cool. vaaaska 07-08-2005, 01:54 PM Yep, too much scrolling. Actually, what is painful is the harsh cobalt blue. The previous version had a less harsh blue (on the eyes). But overall, this is a welcome happening. I would gladly kick in a day's design/planning to reduce the amount or space (height) required to make the top portion of this site happen. I suggest you place that big add to the right of the log and then the sub-ad (whatever it's called) underneath that. I bet we could shave off 150 pixels or so...and that's alot. And the logo? I bet I could round up a small team of people to redo that gratis. JPnyc 07-08-2005, 02:00 PM Actually the forum starts higher up on the page than it did before. laserlight 07-08-2005, 02:11 PM hmm... is it just me, or does the post# link (which links to a page presenting the post on a single page) blend into the blue bar background? JPnyc 07-08-2005, 02:15 PM It's you..............................................just kidding :) I'll fix it. goldbug 07-08-2005, 02:16 PM hmm... is it just me, or does the post# link (which links to a page presenting the post on a single page) blend into the blue bar background? EDIT: nm, JPNYC is on the ball! :) JPnyc 07-08-2005, 02:20 PM Fix-ed. Please send donations in the form of fresh NYC pizzas to JPnyc, C/O Jupitermedia inc. ny, ny Thank you. goldbug 07-08-2005, 02:21 PM Fix-ed. Please send donations in the form of fresh NYC pizzas to JPnyc, C/O Jupitermedia inc. ny, ny Thank you. We've got Adriatico's "New York Style" pizza, and it'll be fresh.... when sent :D I could have my wife order you some Pizza Hut next time she's playing EverQuest (hehehe that feature is SO dangerous) kender 07-08-2005, 02:23 PM personally i prefer the old layout.. but i am also allergic to change JPnyc 07-08-2005, 02:25 PM And they'll be ambulatory by time they arrive? davidjam 07-08-2005, 03:13 PM How do you mark a thread resolved? Sxooter 07-08-2005, 03:44 PM Fix-ed. Please send donations in the form of fresh NYC pizzas to JPnyc, C/O Jupitermedia inc. ny, ny Thank you. Sorry, all I got around me is Chicago style pizza. Want an Italian beef sandwich or a hot dog with everything on it? got plenty of those too. Elizabeth 07-08-2005, 05:09 PM I think the thread looks less cluttered, actually... I like it (although I, too, am confused easily with changes) JPnyc 07-08-2005, 05:18 PM No hacks are currently installed, like mark resolved, and the searches won't work til the DB is indexed, which is causing a problem at the moment. I don't expect either to be resolved until early next week. vaaaska 07-08-2005, 06:31 PM Sorry, all I got around me is Chicago style pizza. Want an Italian beef sandwich or a hot dog with everything on it? got plenty of those too. Mmmmmmm...we used to have deep dish Chicago pizza Fedex'd to us in Seattle. They pack spices in the tomatoes... Drooling to the max... Installer 07-08-2005, 06:39 PM I like having all the horizontal space devoted to the posts. What I don't like, and I mean really don't like, is having to do so much extra scrolling just to read a posted script. With all that extra horizontal space, why limit the code space so much? It seems self-defeating. On the monitor and thread I'm looking at right now, the code text area barely uses half the screen (53 of 78 columns of code showing, and only 29 of 35 lines). With a smaller screen and different resolution it still goes less than 2/3 of the way to the right. So now, instead of just one or sometimes two, there are three scrollbars to contend with, and little chance to see very much code at one time. Otherwise, it's good, except for the over-saturated blue. :queasy: cretaceous 07-08-2005, 07:20 PM Have to agree with the peeps who dont much like it - the bright blue, the thicker blue bars, the extra lines in the details about the poster Long horizontal lines of text are much harder to read - the eye loses track around halfway and bounces from one line of text to another - thats why serif text is easier to read as the little serif strokes assist eye scanning - sure I can just change my browser window but it didnt used to be so wide Looks like someone has been copying graphics from Son of OS X meets Wolfman XP but I'm allergic to change as well - have been since the cambrian era edit- but hey that little Search thingy is very funky - put a grin on my face Sxooter 07-08-2005, 07:22 PM Mmmmmmm...we used to have deep dish Chicago pizza Fedex'd to us in Seattle. They pack spices in the tomatoes... And just think, I can walk to at least five good Chicago style pizza joints at lunch. :) csn 07-08-2005, 08:25 PM Do you work down in The Loop, Sxooter? planetsim 07-08-2005, 08:51 PM I personally dont mind it however maybe having the post layout with user info one side and post the other (which im guessing is what most want) would be nice. But nice to see vB3 (even though I think its bloatware its better bloatware than the older version) if that makes any sense :) JPnyc 07-08-2005, 08:52 PM User info can be back at the left side, if the majority wants it that way. It's an option. Installer 07-08-2005, 09:21 PM I like it a lot better with the user info on top, but, again, the restrictive code area layout causes way too much scrolling for me. planetsim 07-08-2005, 09:43 PM I like it a lot better with the user info on top, but, again, the restrictive code area layout causes way too much scrolling for me. Are you referring to the PHP/Code Display with Frames ive always appreciated that feature of vB3 gets rid of side scroll on the main window. User info can be back at the left side, if the majority wants it that way. It's an option. is that an option for the user or administrative only? As I cant see how the user can do it maybe my mind is still use to the old vB but this is quite an upgrade :) Now wheres my firefox emoticon :) (I cant find the post anymore but it was here somewhere, and unfortunately search isnt going to be working for a little while) You have included too many images in your signature or in your previous post. Please go back and correct the problem and then continue again. Images include use of smilies, the vB code [img] tag and HTML <img> tags. The use of these is all subject to them being enabled by the administrator. Cant I have more then 2 emoticons in my posts? JPnyc 07-08-2005, 10:14 PM No it's a global option, not per user. bpat1434 07-09-2005, 12:26 AM Well, time for my 2 cents. Thanks for updating. Great to see it finally happened. I like the format, either way. I haven't done too much with other posts, but I think I can handle it. Perhaps there is a way to create a "skin"/"theme" to vB3 that will give the user the option to see info on left or top or old vB theme. Just an idea. ~Brett JPnyc 07-09-2005, 12:46 AM No sorry, that would be too complex and time consuming to even attempt, if it's even possible. kender 07-09-2005, 12:49 AM how bout having both pieces of software running, /board and /oldboard accessing same database? TheDefender 07-09-2005, 01:52 AM Still absorbing it in myself... I definitely like some of the features (like the quick reply, and the popup hovers to preview a post), but I'm still getting used to the new layout... IMHO, I think that separator betweek each post where the posting date shows up is a bit of a distraction, and I find myself stumbling from post to post... (oh wait, nevermind, it's just me). I'd like to see each post defined individually better, maybe through the use of borders rather than huge blocks like that... Overall though, I think it's a great step in the right direction. Weedpacket 07-09-2005, 03:45 AM One thing I've just noticed is that due to some curious optical effect, avatars look larger, now.... Jason Batten 07-09-2005, 04:18 AM I'm not trying to be difficult that just naturally follows me around but this is truly awful, I do not like the layout and the newish theme is just ewww. I'm off to check my control panel, lets see if I have the power to choose. vaaaska 07-09-2005, 05:22 AM One thing I've just noticed is that due to some curious optical effect, avatars look larger, now.... Turn off the avatars completely. I've never liked avatars in any way. That's an idea, to allow users to use their own css rules. There are other (very customized) forums that do this - yayhooray.com. But I'm happy with the change for the most part... Weedpacket 07-09-2005, 06:13 AM Turn off the avatars completely. I've never liked avatars in any way.Um... no. Not for a reason like that. But seriously, IT DISPLAYS THE CORRECT DATE AND TIME!!!! WOOHOO!!! vaaaska 07-09-2005, 08:07 AM Subscribing to threads...and also having a location where you can view all of your subscribed threads is really nice. I'm not sure if that was in the previous version...but I like it. bubblenut 07-09-2005, 09:54 AM I like it mostly, one thing I don't like quite so much is the width of the message area. I'm sure I read a study at some point which said that text should not be wider than a certain amount for comfortable reading (I seem to remember that that width was related to the standard book size). I would rather a bit of a narrower area for the body, something which moving the user data to the side would achieve. One thing that frustrates me about all the forum software out there at the moment (that I've come accross) is their love affair with javascript prompts on the bbcode panel. It would be so easy, and so much cleaner (to look at, and not much messier to code) to have a little widget panel which appears with the relevant fields when the user clicks a bbcode button and then disappears when it's subbmitted to the main textarea. I haven't had a proper nose around the place yet but I trust there's loads of cool and funky little things around the place to make me smile. Thanks :) laserlight 07-09-2005, 10:00 AM I'm sure I read a study at some point which said that text should not be wider than a certain amount for comfortable reading It also helps for speed reading techniques - if the text doesnt span too wide it may be possible to simply read from top to bottom without having to bother with left to right. I do prefer having the user/time info on the left and the context on the right. JPnyc 07-09-2005, 10:09 AM Well if you guys want it on left, I mean most of you, I'll change it. Someone put up a poll, a moderator, and let the membership decide. Never mind, I'll do it. JPnyc 07-09-2005, 10:42 AM how bout having both pieces of software running, /board and /oldboard accessing same database? Sorry, can't do that either. The old forum software is gone for good I'm afraid. Weedpacket 07-10-2005, 08:46 AM One thing that frustrates me about all the forum software out there at the moment (that I've come accross) is their love affair with javascript prompts on the bbcode panel. You think that's bad - I've come across one (commercial, ASP.NET) forum application that requires Javascript to make the pagination links work. Brilliant! Plus, I've seen the post editor front end criticised time and again, with the most whacked-out posts being produced. At least the most mangling this one did was the result of a carefree attitude towards blocks of PHP. Which it doesn't have any more. preg_replace('/http://www.example.com/foo\s+\d\sbar(.*:)/', 'FUBAR', $string); Look! Backslashes! No smilie tags! No spurious anchor HTML! Merve 07-10-2005, 10:55 AM I'm getting this in Firefox. http://vv.carleton.ca/~adewan/pmonnextline2.jpg PM or AM always ends up on the next line when the date is not yesterday or today. Also when replying to a message, the tooltip does not change when I move my cursor from icon to icon (i.e. when I move my cursor from over the bold button to the italic button, the tooltip does not change position and still reads 'bold'.) Other than that, the new look is a welcome change (though I like the old smilies and icons better). JPnyc 07-10-2005, 11:17 AM What screen size and browser? I've never seen what you show there yet, on 3 machines. goldbug 07-10-2005, 11:58 AM Looks like Merve's default font size is cranked up. Merve 07-10-2005, 12:34 PM I'm running in Mozilla Firefox 1.0.4 with 1152 by 864 screen resolution. JPnyc 07-10-2005, 02:39 PM Yeah because I have that same res and I've yet to see that in any of the major browsers. TheDefender 07-10-2005, 04:10 PM I'm running Mozilla Firefox 1.04 and everything is normal at 1024x768, 1280x1024 and 1600x1200 merve... Like Goldbug said, your text size is set way too high merve... Click View | Text Size | Normal and it should look right thereafter. If not, then click View | Text Size | Decrease until it does go back to normal sizing. goldbug 07-10-2005, 06:18 PM click View | Text Size | Decrease until it does go back to normal sizing. Or [CTRL]+[+] or [CTRL]+[-] to achieve the same thing (my preferred method) TheDefender 07-10-2005, 06:31 PM Mine too. I am a Keystroke kinda guy myself... [CTRL]+[0] to go to normal text size Merve. (FYI) Merve 07-10-2005, 06:40 PM No, CTRL+0 is the text size in the screenshot. I'll just resign myself to putting the text size at lower than default; it'll work until I find a better solution. JPnyc 07-10-2005, 06:53 PM I don't use FF often but I seem to remember there's more than one place to set font size. Weedpacket 07-11-2005, 12:07 AM I don't use FF often but I seem to remember there's more than one place to set font size.Yup, under General Options. If the "Minimum font size" is set, it will override the 9pt specified in the stylesheet. vaaaska 07-11-2005, 06:33 AM I have a complaint/bug...when I input a url using the tools provided by the board it refocuses the page to the top. Perhaps it's just a Safari issue, but this is one of the few forums where I encounter this problem. document.form.theTextarea.focus(); Sxooter 07-11-2005, 11:03 AM Do you work down in The Loop, Sxooter? Yep, in the Blue Light Special Tower (formerly the Sears Tower haha, jk) bpat1434 07-13-2005, 02:04 PM Found an interesting problem. If you go and read a thread with the [php] code that scrolls, the print-view (under "Thread Tools") still shows a scrolling window. If I remember correctly, it won't print all the contents of the frame. So if someone gave a lot of code, that's not really cool to have to copy & paste all the code to be printed. Just a thought. ~Brett PHP Builder
