Anyone here work for a decent webhost or have some good prefered ones? I'm looking for a decent host for a decent price... I'll gladly compare them unless you feel the urge to add package info inside a reply...
Basically looking for PHP (and other serverside scripts if possible since I like learning new things), MySQL, decent size (many are up to 1Gig of space these days) and a decent bandwith, domain name optional but I wouldnt mind being able to host multiple domains from 1 account either...)
Sorry if this sounds lazy, I dont have much free time these days, I just got home from overseas, have a month long class + 2 other things during that class, and I have to pack my house and get ready to move my wife because I have to goto Korea soon... so please bear with me?

Copying my original PM, which you won't get since you exceeded your PM storage limit...
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So as to avoid posting something that may piss off the powers that be, I figured I'd shoot my host's info to you. Very good pricing and I don't even know (in the year that I've been with them) that they've ever had downtime... If so, it's that 15 minutes at 4AM that I wouldn't care about anyhow. Anyhow, it's who I've been using for the past year, and you can host multiple domains on a single account.

Clearly, I have the best webhost :D
Five years of searching and I found www.servage.net, I use to host with www.powweb.com but I left them because their service is ****e, unless you like having your MySQL database down every week
If you look at the main page of servage they list everything they offer... or have a quick look at my signature for the basics ;) Servage are friendly, they are quick with support if you have any questions. You can earn free hosting... they have upgraded they're service at least 3 times, I think a total of 4 times and I haven't been with them for even 12 months yet.

I saw that after I posted Netnerd, very impressive indeed, although one question comes to mind.... What was their Previous name? I know a couple of companies from Houston that started around that time and I'm leery to get into working with some of them again... I dont suppose you know?

That is kind of odd that they throw out that "when we changed our name" statement so blase like, but don't mention their former name. If you go to webhostingtalk.com and search their forum for servage, there are some interesting posts (both good and bad).

I highly recommend godaddy.com. I've been using them for over 2 yrs, recommend them for anyone I build sites for. They have various low priced plans and support php or asp, 24/7 phone support and it's GOOD phone support. The kind where you get to talk to an actual HUMAN person who tries to help and usually knows HOW. A rarity to be sure, in this day and age.

I've had 2 bad run ins with Godaddy already, to the point where I ended up talking to 1 step below the owner due to their support not being able to fix a problem in a timely fashion, granted I got my domain renewed free for the last 2 years.... doesnt excuse the fact that i spent 2 weeks trying to resolve simple problems through their customer support.
So far Servage looks like the better place... they dont offer "many" services, ie. it seems they only do hosting, which I wouldnt mind a reseller option in the future, but I really dont need my own "business" at the time being anyways.
And I'll go dig around on webhostingtalk now :) Thanks!

I just received an email from servage today saying how they are increasing all members webspace slowly. It increases 1 - 10megs every day.
Servage appolgise for technical errors as soon as they happen and they've only had one since I have been with them. To say sorry they gave every one a free months worth of hosting. Every month they improve.
BTW Servage offer reselling but its sort of an undeveloped thing. I was just told to use the current package but one customer per package.

Thats quote is a bit disturbing if anything... I don't agree with everything our country does, but grouping "Americans" as "non trustworthy" is a bit appalling...
I don't like what France does... but I'll never say "damn your French, you're a coward"...
Anyways... don't want to get the thread off topic (even if it is my thread)... but being that they have offices in Houston does lend to the notion that they do have American counterparts so maybe you might want to rethink that ideaology

When I was doing a search for web hosts two stood out to me. Please note that I don't know a whole about them, but I found quite a few good reviews about both of them, and both of them have really good prices. They are http://globedomain.com and http://www.surpasshosting.com/

Bit sketpical on how servage are able to have those prices like < $10 AUD is a bit insane (unless of course its using a US Data Centre) considering what Ive seen $15+ as starters for majority of Australian hosts and most of which are slowish.
Not sure if they fit your needs but ASO (http://asmallorange.com) is who I am hosted with and quite happy with them only one major drama when the data centre they use went a bit crazy forgotten the full story but they eventually changed to another, Support is damn good most of my tickets get answered with 5-10mins on avg and if it requires being fixed usually fixed within the first reply.

You could try Mesopia (http://www.mesopia.com) (used to be dr2 (http://www.dr2.net)). I have a reseller account with them. They're very good. If you want stuff installed, then its just a case of emailing/posting on the forums and they'll go to work (almost) instantaniously!!

I usually throw out globat.com when someone is looking for decent inexpensive hosting. Not had a problem with them yet. I personally host with cwihosting.com, a little more expensive, but they have Postgres available.

Uh...whatever.
Having had business dealings on a number of continents I'll tell you that you want to do business with Americans because the goal is to create a fair deal - not a one time let me have all your cash and mayble I'll come through on my deal.
There is a reason why American businesses are so successful and it has nothing to do with who the president is...
If you want cheap...cheap...and I mean cheap. Take a look at
Jiffynet (http://www.jiffynet.net/). When I signed up with them four years ago I never would have thought that I would stay this long. There have been a few problems, but an email to the right person and they are always resolved very fast.
Sometimes, cheap is just that, but in this case it's been really good (at least for me).
And...because they are the best thing happening in hosting...and they are good people...and they are creating a 'CPanel killer' (in their words) and I believe them wholeheartedly...and they have built an amazing community...
TextDrive (http://www.textdrive.com/)
When it's time for me to switch hosts (when I'm not happy with my current one), they will be my next host...

Direct quote from their website: "Servage was formally founded in 1998 under a different name." As far as the second half of your statement goes, I'll just leave it alone and at Tekky's response.

Well, Servage are great and the best deal around. BTW planetsim, they just started supporting the AUS dollar, I signed up on US hosting which was 7.45/month, it works out the same... although you know our dollar... bloody thing bounces up and down

Maybe I'm missing something... but no one has mentioned if any of these hosts support PHP 5 or MySQL 4.1 (I think that's it, the one with subqueries). I would like to move over to PHP 5 but don't know where to do it.
I thought the American comment was funny (youthful spirits and all). I personally don't have anamosity towards Americans anymore, in fact I'm more understanding of who they are and what drives them. All I know is that I have a hard time relating to them on many levels... born and raised Canadian...

They aren't american. So they can be trusted.Hm. Do you realize how it would sound if I substituted almost any other ethnic/national/religious/gender reference?
They aren't black. So they can be trusted.
They aren't Jewish. So they can be trusted.
They aren't Muslims. So they can be trusted.
They aren't Catholics. So they can be trusted.
They aren't women. So they can be trusted.
They aren't Canadians. So they can be trusted.
Interesting... no matter what I put in there, as long as it's a generalization (sorry, generalisation for you British and Brit-descendants), it's comes off as blatant discrimination. And I find that quite offensive. :glare:

Servage support PHP5, you may have to quest which version of PHP you want though. I signed up and they only had 4 at the time I asked if they were going to support php5 and they said not at the moment then next thing you know... php5 is supported.
Hi BuzzLY, Hi Americans,
I apologise for my comment, not sure why I put that in there... I guess I was trying to say that servage can be trusted. You see I've grown up with discrimination towards the Americans, sort of like you guys and the Canadians ey. Takes a while to "beat" it out of ones self.

In my lifetime I have had about 6 hosts and from my experience you get what you pay for. I now pay about $35/month. It might seem expensive to some, but their service is awesome, they are always up, I can host multiple sites, I can host my domains on both Linux and Window server, I have VPS (128 megs, 20 processes), and they have real daily backups that I used once with no problems. If you have the money and your time is worth something then I would spend a little more.
I forgot to mention, I also have MSSQL, Oracle 10g, MySQL, and PgSQL.
For what I get they are dirt cheap.

Actually, about the "not trusting americans" thing, it isn't so much the ISP, it's the legal system it is beholden to. And, the American legal system, right now, does not favor the consumer / provider...

Who is this? (seriously) When I was looking around a while back, most VPS/VDS setups wouldn't allow PgSQL due to the way it uses shared memory. I'm still wanting to do the virtual server thing, since colo is still too expensive for my needs.

Yup I was suprised to see that too, I signed up for 6 months and saw that this morning... I dont like the DNS panel... it seems like it doesnt quite function correctly maybe... I created a few CNAMES vs IN A entries and they never resolved.... hopefully changing them to IN A's will fix that sometime tonight....

Well, you can always suggest things to the team. Everything I have written to them about or suggested has made it on to Servage. They value their customers and I assume they listen to what the majority have to say.
Only thing that bugs me is that I have to occasionally pay for it :D
