What does it take to become a moderator for PHPBuilder?

I would like to volunteer. I am not a PHP Ninja, but I am getting there. I offer my help and request assistance in all of the PHP, MySQL and Clientside boards. I follow the board guidelines and usually gracefully inform others of their oversight in them. I have been a member for a couple of years now ... I think over 3.

Anyways ... Who would I contact about this?

Found that answer ... sorry for this thread.

Generally mods are invited. I appreciate the offer, and will take it under consideration. Thanks!

And remember one other thing - I was much like you... I tried to be as helpful as possible with as little attitude/sarcasm/etc. as possible, etc.

Really, not much as changed since I was offered the position of a moderator. Other than occasionally moving/deleting threads myself instead of just reporting them, nothing really changed in regards to my posting habits.

Basically, what I'm trying to say is, thanks for being a moderator in disguise as your average everyday helper! It's nice to see helpful people like you in a community as popular as PHPBuilder, moderatorship or not. :)

No grandchildren, due to not having any...uh...you know... :o (The indignities we dogs have to go through!)
Age: 8-1/2 years, or about 56 human years

PS: That makes me about 5-1/2 years older than my so-called "owner", who also has no grandchildren, simply because he was smart enough not to have any children, not because of a lack of...uh...you know...

Hmm looking over this, having been in the "messaging" and boards since the good ole' BBS days, I know one thing...

Being a moderator is fulfilling, yes, but not really "fun" always, since it is work to do.

And they are not always chosen based on the length of time they have been posting, it can encapsulate that, along with how the administrator feels the person would do the job, and if they know the person wants it.

That and sometimes someone is there at the right time..

If I wasn't "young" in this forum so to speak here i'd want it too (not that I dont, however).

On a note though, ALL of the moderators have always been very polite, helpful, and good (to me).

Yet, despite moderator duties Weedpacket has been able to widen his post count lead over me to a whopping 121%, and it seems like I am doomed to fail in my quest to overtake him... my only hope may be for JPync to arrange that he becomes an administrator with full time article contribution responsibilities or something.

One day, Weedpacket, one day *shakes fist*

bradgrafelman

Who says post count means anything? :p

Don't take the following personally - I am in no way inferring that this relates to you (because I don't think it does), but a friend of mine was tired of dealing with pointless posts throughout his forums. People would respond to posts with a single thumbs-up image/smiley. He ended up disabling the post count indicator, and the pointless posts gradualy started disappearing.

laserlight
05-13-2007, 03:37 PM
No offense taken. If I really did want to increase my post count just for the sake of it, I would be the most frequent participant in the word association game.

Weedpacket

....with full time article contribution responsibilities or something. The previous editor, jstarkey, actually approached me about this at one point. I couldn't do a regular thing, however. Elizabeth's monthly news review (which started around the same time) is a much much better thing, anyway.

I am seeing that already with myself, but I do what I can.

Although, I do frequent the boards just to see if there is a quick problem I can help someone with. If not, I just leave the site.

That's something you can do when you're a regular member. When you're a mod, you're obligated to stick around and fix things, which isn't always very fun. In the long run, I think we're all better off if everyone moderates their own posts. ;)

I've been giving bad advice here since 2002 (as many of you can vouch for.) :D This forum has always been helpful for me whenever I need to avoid work and get behind on deadlines. To actually have an obligation to moderate! No thanks! That would impose on the times where I actually like what I'm coding and get work done :)

By the way, I've seen most of you guys on here for a very long time. Besides the main reason above, I post alot here because I just enjoy answering questions, when I can, and learning new things as you all correct me on my bad advice.

Why do you all post here so much (besides the glamor of being a moderator or even pay {gasp!} that at least one of you has?) Just curious...

Obviously, I love making smileys too!

bradgrafelman
07-23-2008, 12:15 PM
To actually have an obligation to moderate! No thanks! That would impose on the times where I actually like what I'm coding and get work done :)Eh... there's really no "obligation" to do anything, it's more of a volunteer system. I do feel morally obligated at times, though, to delete bump posts or cross-posted threads, ban spammers, check the spam filter, and make JPnyc's life a living hell. :p

Why do you all post here so much (besides the glamor of being a moderatorThere's really not much glamor involved... I've even been flamed for trying to be some all-powerful moderator when I simply asked someone to watch their language (is editing the f-bomb out of someone's post and calling them on it really all that bigoted of me??).

or even pay {gasp!} that at least one of you has?)Oh yeah, loads o' cash in the moderating field; it's quite the lucrative business. Oi, JP, gimme another raise, would ya? 10% this time, maybe? ;)

bradgrafelman

Heh, I've joked about it several times... 10% raise of $0 salary = ... well let's just say JP probably won't even have to bother with any paperwork. ;)

JPnyc I'm sure gets paid by Jupitermedia, though it sounds like he definitely earns it; this isn't the only board he administers AFAIK...

bretticus

Wow, I can see that in order to make good on my secret moderator ambitions, I simply need to have a signature with some actual value: Helpful PHP links and such....hmmm...let's see...

bradgrafelman
07-23-2008, 01:48 PM
It also helps to be pithy in composing a signature, too. :p

NogDog
07-23-2008, 02:02 PM
I used to moderate at another forum, but I got burned out trying to keep people in line who consider using a forum however they want to be a right and not a privilege, so I gave up trying and had my moderator status revoked. Then JP sweet-talked me into moderating here, promising to triple my previous moderating fee. Unfortunately 3 * 0 is no better than 10% of 0. :(

Why do I do it? I guess in part because I like helping people, and partly because it's a series of small, focused problems to solve: just right for my limited attention span which has trouble concentrating on the big problems I should be concentrating on.

bretticus
07-23-2008, 02:12 PM

Well, if I may interject and offer my consolation, I realise that being a moderator can be 'a thankless job'.

I frequent other forums (computer graphics related, not php based).. and yes, I can see the patience run out of moderators from time to time..Some people really know how to push other people's buttons... and since as mentioned already, it is on a volunteer basis, it truly can be tough sometimes (you don't have to worry about me though.. I'm a good boy :D (a good boy that can't code his way out of a paper bag for the most part, but a good boy none-the-less)).

So I personally tip my hats off to you guys for all the time that you put into helping people out. I have not been on this forum for a long time, and I am learning a heck of a lot! Between Weedpacket's cryptic (yet effective) guidance and Nogdog's outright brute force PHP knowledge to mention a few, it really is a great learning environment you guys have going here.

So again, a big thanks to the moderators, admins and admin-minions (that would include you Brett :D) people like you guys really do help out alot (but that's the point of forums, is it not?) So Kudos!

I now bow, and the curtains fall.

Cheers,

NRG
