Unix install 4 windows dummy

I have been using php for a few years on windows and on Unix via virtual hosting but I now need to install php on the virtual Unix machine myself.....I know nothing about Unix.

Is this even possible from a windows machine?

Does anyone know of some really easy instructions that also include stuff like where to get a compiler, etc....or should I not even attempt it without a good knowledge of Unix?

Look in this forum a couple of messages up about php and pdflib. That's a pretty close to complete set of instructions for installing php on linux.

What flavor Unix are you running, by the way? Does it have all the gnu tools like autoconf installed?

Well, you'll probably have to install the webserver too then, it's basically not very hard, but if you know nothing about unix and you want to put this machine in production, you're taking a lot of risk. Practise a few months on your own unix box and only do a real system when you feel you are ready for it. Unix sysadmin is not something you become by reading a few README's.

It's probably about time I got an old pc and a good book on unix then......or stick to windows...:)

Don't worry about the difficulty, not every one does this on a daily basis. My colegue who is the windows NT administrator was able to install a very difficult configuration of MySQL, PHP, and SSL by following the tutorial at www.devshed.com. Look under Server Side -> Administration -> Soothingly seamless set up of Apache, PHP and MySQL.

You'll get through it. There are a few typos in the the tutorial, so read the message board posts there.

Heck, it's not even a very hard modification to add Front Page support.
