hello, i just built a new pc, and am having a tough time decide what setup i should run here... i could do any one of these scenerios:
1)Win2k Server (IIS)- and PHP4, MySQL
2)Win98 SE- and PWS, PHP4, MySQL
3)Win98 and Win2k Dual Boot

the problem is, i need the compatibility of win98 and the server capabilities and stability of 2k... my pc is 3/4 used for programming and web design... the other 1/4 is gaming, and i have a good rig for it now...

i don't like having the messyness of 2 o/s's on one computer, but im not sure if win98 can handle the job alone... all i need the server capabilities for is testing, not for actually hosting a server...

so, to the point, can anyone with good and/or bad experience using any of these configurations post, and tell me what you think?

space is no object.. i have 60 gb so dual boot would be ok, but im not sure if thats what i want to do...

from experience, is win2k fairly compatible with my system? :
asus a7a266 Motherboard
AMD Athlon 1333MHz 266Mhz FSB CPU
512 MB pc2100 DDR Ram
Maxtor 60 GB 7200 RPM ATA/100 Hard drive
ATI Radeon AGP 64 MB DDR video card
creative pc-dvd encore dvd player
sony 12x8x32x cdrw
creative soundblaster live platinum

should i be ok for combatability in win2k here?
sorry about the enormous post, but i really appreciate any suggestions...

well well well lets see what we got here.
OK, currently I am under win98 se and I have installed apache for myself. Also I got perl (my favorite :), php, and mySQL. With one minimized msdos window I can use my comp as a server mashine (though 1.5 mbits aight gonna do it :(( ).
But I am seriously thinking about changing my win98se to win2k pro (not server), because of the speed. Yet, I just installed slackware and i'm going to play with it also.
So, in two words, it doesn't matter what OS you've got (unless you're extremly picky) - you can always put apache on it and feel gooooood (haven't tried to set apache on 95 though).
Bottom line: it's you call, software doesn't care.

P.S. dagn!! you got me with the video, I have gforce2 mx 32 (cheap), but all other parts practicly identical :)
cheers

LOL! thanks for the response...

i got my system just up yesterday, and today installed PWS (always had good luck with it), PHP4, and MySQL all on Win98 SE... so far it seems VERY stable..... that could partly be due to the hardware, but it is working right now... im not sure if i want to change to 2k.. mostly i want 2k for the stability, but if i continue to be relatively problem free with all the programs i am running, i think i might stay on win98...

i'll report back later if its still nice n stable...

heh, gforce2 MX isn't a bad card... it is better for framerates than the radeon at 1024x768 and lower, but ati wins at higher resolutions, and is finer detailed card.. oh well, we'll all be on the gf3 bandwagon in half a year or so.. right? lol

Also would suggest BadBlue as a much easier server to configure than PWS. Also a 170K download - not 50 Megs or what ever PWS is these days. Tiny but has lots of features, http://badblue.com/helpphp.htm is quick start.

:) thanks for the link.. very interesting.. i don't have a problem with PWS... actually its nice because this way i can run php4 and asp... my current setup of MySQL, PWS, and PHP4 all on win98 is working nicely still!
