compile libxml2 failure

when i have install libxml2-2.4.0 to /usr/local/lib,and link the libxml2.so.5 to libxml.so,then i compiled my php4,but some error had happened.
DOM in default path not found.
Please reinstall the libxml>=2.2.7 distribution.

who can tell me the reason and how to deal with it?

check if /usr/local/lib is in your paths (/etc/ld.so.conf) or try

--with-dom=/usr/local
