gd and php-4.0.6

If i have gd-1.8.3 installed but specify a director in the php ./configure will php default back to the gd-1.8.3 or the directory i have specified.

The one you specified. If it can't find it I'm not sure if it goes looking then or gives up.

I have tried compiling 4.0.6 with gd and freetype libraries. I use the exact ./configure for 4.0.4 and 4.0.5 and they work fine, anyone know why this might be happening.
