Hi Lee, I had the same problem until I did this...

first of all... I know for sure libphp4.so is created when you install PHP4... On Solaris 9, I had my filemanager up with that directory opened, and at the end of the install... VIOLA.. libphp4.so was created... whoo hoooo!!!!

(ahem).... (lets not get too excited yet)...

I was trying to install Apache 1.3.26 from directions I found on DevShed for "Seamlessly Smooth Setup or Apache, MySQL, PHP, SSL," for ecommerce, and had to deal with a couple typos and outdated versions of stuff.... I found directions elsewhere to get Apache installed with DSO support which basically entails the following:

....naw I won't type it all here, but here's a link to where I found it... Actually, I ended up doing a make clean in the apache install directory... a make clean in the PHP directory.. then proceded to DELETE the Apache directory from my /usr/local and PHP from /usr/local/lib .... then went to the following link to start from scratch after seeing libphp4.so created, but after getting a "libphp4.so is garbled.. this a DSO file?" when I tried starting Apache...

Anyway, just to get things rolling, I would do the above and move on with life from there .. :) ya know? otherwise, Unix app installs will drive us both crazy!!! (Mooooo hahahahah.... ) <kidding> <grin> I guess I'm just low on sleep and a bit .... skittish? that the word?...

TRY THIS LINK and I wish you the BEST!!!
