where to put php files?

Hi, I just installed Linux 7.3 on my system (i'm new so please be nice) so everything is still default. Apache is working ok, and i know that php is installed on my system. Where do i put my php files at so the server reads them? I was thinking in /home/var/www/html/ but when I do that and type in the address it just echos the code back to me. What am I doing wrong.
