bah... its ver 4.0.5, win2k server and im trying to learn how to do COM in php website @!#$... (u know Word and all that)

anyone got any ideas why it would crash?

Check out the free Word transcoding features in the BadBlue server here: http://badblue.com/helpdoc.htm - this may help and, if it's suitable, you could even let IIS let it serve up the doc by making fopen/fsockopen (HTTP) requests to the transcoder.
