I'm running windows 98 on my computer and I have 800 mhz and 384 mb ram. About 3 days ago my computer suddenly slowed up considerably. I't is taking about 1-2 minutes to open up any of the programs, such as Word, Instant Messenger, ect. I tried to de- frag twice. That did nothing. I updated my virus software and that found nothing. I had 128 mb Ram and then i tried to upgrade to 384. That also did not solve the problem. I also tried an disk clean up, and i adjusted the startup tasks. Neither of These helped. Any suggestions besides re-formatting?

Check the number of processes you are instantiating at startup...I ran into this too, and there was just so much junk that keeps opening on startup that everything slowed down...Try and remove some of the programs...stuff like musicmatch, Download accelerator, real player..etc

im also running php apache and mysql in myworkstation..but it seems that everything is fine. I guess you have lots of programs running on the system tray. Try to remove them from the startup and try also to use msconfig. just go to run then type msconfig. you can reconfigure some startup files there.
