General Chat/Introduction Forum?

There's a huge php community out there -- many programmers, with different knowledge and experiences. I was wondering if we could create a 'general chat' or 'introduction' forum, or some kind of forum to bring this community together. I like to see the human aspect of the members. Would this be something you would like to pursue also?

Lightbulb general discussion forum with vb

I've seen at other vBulletin-using sites that forums can be nested more than two levels and that there aren't really categories per se but just forums that have children. So for example, we could make the existing "Discussion" forum open to posting, and the current Feedback forum (this one) would remain as a child of Discussion as it currently is so that feedback-related things would be separated.

I like the idea of having this type of thing by the way (since the first paragraph was merely explaining a way to do it).

For an example of a forum site that uses this type of nesting with no separate "catagories" that can't contain posts, check out http://ignitegaming.com/forums/forum...?s=&forumid=29. As you can see, the forum this link is for has posts in it, but it also has a child form that has posts as well.

undertow, I don't think that's what I meant.

I meant I wanted to see this community be closer, and get to know each other on a more personal level rather than just as programmers -- a type of bonding.

On my board, (http://board.php-princess.net), there's also a 'community' category, where everyone can just post about anything.

And jmcneese's chatroom idea sounds great!

Talking im agreeing with you

I'm agreeing with you that I think it's a good idea it's just that most of my post was explaining how we could make this community forum without having to make a new one by just making it so you can post in "Discussion".

I wasn't saying we need an "Ignite Gaming World" .

I think that's fine. Having a forum for just general chat is all I'm asking for.

Look at how many people we could be getting to know.

How about "General Chat" - a forum where you can discuss anything you want.

I was thinking something a little different, like: Function Lounge(), or Echo Lounge - something with a PHP reference. You know, something we may call our own <sigh>

Not sure I like the "Lounge" part though. Flash Kit has the Coffee Lounge. Java Boutique has the Cafe. Both are Gen Chat forums.

okay, all your ideas just got me thinking: let's write a php community program.

it's be a lounge/forum/chat/hangout/cafe program. we'll have many rooms, areas, etc and represent people by avatars and/or names/aliases. we'll have a map view showing where users are currently.

people can talk one on one, group chats, whole community chat, speeches, etc.

think of it like a virtual assembly

i'll post details later if i ever get around to coding any of it!

Gen Chat is live. Echo Lounge it is. If we wanna change the name later, we can always do so.
