Linux, Windows XP locked me out of my computer and won't let me register. i formatted my hard drive because it was getting tons of memory problems. after formatting, the problems stopped BUT i could not register Windows because it said i already registered and i'll be dead before i hand out 150 bucks every time i have to format my computer because of MS's shotty programming.
I have Win98, NT, 2000, XP, and Linux installed on my various development machines. Each of the Windows machines has had to be re-installed an average of three time this year. The Linux box has never even been re-booted.
I dual boot Linux/KDE and Win2KPro on my laptop. Guess which hasn't had to be re-installed yet...
I am now looking at Macs.
(When you're done laughing, read on)
I borrowed a TI Book for 2 weeks, loaded with OS X 10.2 (Jaguar). It's based on FreeBSD, ported for Mac with the "Aqua" desktop. I gotta tell ya, it's rock solid and ultra smooth.
Apache works. PHP works. PostgreSQL works. Perl works. All my Linux utilities work. I found all my midrange and mainframe utilities with versions that run on it; even Cisco VPN and Microsoft Terminal Services Client!
I have one issue left: I work extensively with JD Edward's One World XP client software written in PowerBuilder for Win2KPro. They gave me a Win2K emulator for the Mac. So far, the JD Edward's One World XP Demo Junior (training software) loaded and runs without issue. If the full version runs...
You might see my ugly mug on the next "switch" promo...

Rock solid, never crashes. I run the same OS on the server at work.
Win2k was okay, but XP is rancid. It treats you like a bloody idiot, and KDE3 is definitely on a par, interface-wise, even ignoring the bothersome messages and questions XP bombards you with.
I don't play games, and I like to program and bugger about with my system. I really do not need Windows and really do not want it.

Unfortunately, Adobe's CEO doesn't like Linux; actually, he's not much into the Open Source idea at all, and selling a Linux port of Photoshop would be giving it support he and Bill Gates don't want to see it get.
Plus, sales of Photoshop for Solaris bombed.

Anyone tried it under WINE?

gimp has more than enough functions for the common or garden graphic designer. you're gonna have to go for xfig or sketch if you need vectors, but otherwise, i think most folk will reach their limits before they reach the gimp's. i just wish it had a reasonable scripting language, not the impenetrable crap that is scheme or perl.
Mandrake Linux for me. I like to rebuild most of the system optimised for my systems cpu.
I like games but i only seem to find the time to play enemy territory and NWN these days.
Oh and NWN runs faster and way! more stable than windows on the same hardware!.
