Titles and me-be-cools

Ok, we need a system for titles. Any suggestions? We've gotta have a no-life title after like 2,000 posts, for starters.

Under your user name, in your posts, you'll see "Junior Member". The titles change after a certain amount of posts. We can edit those and make them a little more PHP specific. Like instead of Junior Member we could have Junior Coder. Then maybe, after 100 posts it'd be Senior Coder.

Why don't you have it follow the PHP release version numbers.

Hello, I'm Jim. I'm a 4.0.6.

I suggest this system:

* Newbie: 0 - 24 posts
* Scripter: 25 - 49 posts
* Developer: 50 - 99 posts
* Programmer: 100 - 249 posts
* Professional: 250 - 499 posts
* Master: 500 - 999 posts
* Guru: 1000+ posts
* Site Admin - Duh!

The current labels seem okay to me; they probably only have meaning to occasional visitors anyway, since those who haunt this forum regularly get to know the knowlegable posters.

I suppose there's no way to know it, but there should be a title like "posted hundreds of times but most of them are wrong". Seriously I kinda don't like the implication that a lot of posts makes someone a professional or guru. I gave up on usenet because of the trolls who posted dozens of times a day.

Here's a non-linear suggestion, you might try a feedback system like ebay. Instead of number of posts, have a "Rate This Post".

Could do uhh... all sorts of crazy things that happen to have some sort of rank, like...

Bit
Byte
Kilobyte
Megabyte
Gigabyte
Terrabyte

Orr uhhh...

Hmm, I dunno, is there something fairly orderly in PHP that could be a funny inside/geeky joke?

Likewise to tomhath, I don't think that a title implying that someone is a newbie based on number of posts is appropriate, either.

I do like the title 'Zend Master' though .

what about:

0-200 post in 6 moths - PHP person
0-200 post in 2 months - PHP Developer
0-200 post in 1 week - PHP Maniac
o-200 post in 1 day - PHP Ninja

but to be serious, I think a voting system would be the best idea too.

Quantity and rate of posting probably don't signify all that much - someone could either be very knowledgable and have lots of good advice, or they might just not have anything better to do . Me? I'm not suggesting anything....No, I don't think 16 posts per day is a lot. A single thread might run on interminably simply because of the need to isolate just what the problem is becomes so involved it turns into a case of "debugging by remote control"; that can really bloat post rates.

The varying titles would be more useful if they could reflect the credibility and understanding of the member - that would probably require some sort of rating system - either "rate this post" or "rate this member" (sorry, self-rating and multiple votes are not allowed ). But for that to yield signficant results, then significant numbers of votes have to be collected. Does anyone actually rate threads at present?

suggestion

Would it be possible to include a "was this response helpful to you" question on posted replies? Then we can count helpful replies as true posts.

Thing is - as has been said above - people generally don't bother rating things.

People need only browse the forums for a little while to work out who's who. Who cares what a member's rating is just so long as they answer your question?
