...admittedly I didn't spend all day looking.

Anyway, hi, do you know, how customizable is PHPBB ?
Is the entire source code exposed?

I would like to explore users being able to filter messages based on some custom criteria each poster must set as part of posting their message, as a convenient drop-down box, which can also be set in their member profile.

Also, I would like each user to have a little gif or jpeg next to thier name on their posts, a small one to the left of their name, and perhaps a bigger one underneath.

I'd like also to explore being able to choose from a selection of animated gifs for the bigger piccy.

How big a deal is it writing a forum all of your own work? I've never written a forum.

You can download a copy of PHPBB and you can change every file

I suggest to check a new "live" version (example on devshed.com)
