Unhappy Studio Server "call to undefined function mysql_..."

I've seen a lot of posts on this subject on the net, but they all seem to be windows and php5 users...I've searched Google, the Zend site, etc . I, however, use Linux and php 4...
I'm debugging remotely, NOT the internal debugger...but the server and the Zend client are on the same machine...so I'm debugging localhost. I've tracked down all the php.ini files on my machine (it's ridiculous - like a demented easter egg hunt!), and I thought I had nailed down which one was actually being parsed...but obviously I've missed something, because mysql_connect() is now unknown to php...
Does anyone have a definitive answer?
Thanking you in advance,
Stuart

If you run phpinfo() the path to the php.ini file is part of the information displayed.
