Whats the Best Combo on Win98 ?

I want to develop on Win 98 with PHP 4 and im looking for a free web server and database that is not too complicated to install. I would like to work with MySQL, but any database would be fine and I have Access 97/2000. This will be strictly for development on a PII with 96 megs of ram, so speed/reliabilty is not an issue for me. TIA

RE: Whats the Best Combo on Win98 ?

Mysql for windows takes about 30 seconds to install....and apache about the same.....and they are both free. If your new to php I'd recommend going with php3......otherwise......knock yourself out.

Contrary to popular belief.....apache running on win 98 can be installed very quickly. Just follow the manual and you'll be fine!

Hello

I think the easiest one is to install OmniHTTP from www.omnicron.com. It comes with PHP4 on it. All what you have to do is install omniHTTP and you are set to go. No sure though about MySQL. I am running Apache and php3 on win98. I have a word file that I got from somebody which has all the procedure to install Apache. Perl, PHP on win98. If you want it, just email me and I will send it to you. I have not tested it but it looks doable

Definiately go with an Apache/PHP3(4)/MySQL combo. If you go to opensource.org, you can download a binary distribution of Apache which is SSL-capable and installs PHP4 for you at the same time. All you have to do is enter you host name and email address when the setup proceedure prompts you, and you should be up and running. If you've neer used MySQL before, try grabbing this once the Apache, PHP, and MySQL are all nicely settled in their new homes on your machine:

http://www.phpwizard.net/projects/phpMyAdmin/index.html

It's a web-based MySQL administration program that allows you to run everything you can from the command prompt. Hope this help!

Cheers,

Geoff

I agree with Geoff. Just for a starter, you can try omni to have a feeling of PHP. Then dump it and get Open Source stuff.

RE: Whats the Best Combo on Win98 ?

Just realized I gave a wrong link in the previous post, opps:) Instead of opensource.org, I <should> have typed opensa.org. However, their server seems to be down for some reason at the moment:(

Cheers,

Geoff

Oozy,

The word doc you mention, does it detail how to install mod_perl on Win98? If so, could you mail it to wig@roadunner.nf.net? Thanx!!!

Geoff

RE: Whats the Best Combo on Win98 ?

The best combo would be installing Red Hat Linux6.2 + apache + php4.0pl2
