More fun stuff from the world of PHP! The week in review gave us:

Zend Releases Zend Studio 4 Enterprise Edition

This new release for Zend is "a high-end version of the company's Zend Studio 4 development environment designed specifically for highly-reliable PHP application development. Zend Studio 4 Enterprise offers many new tools for creating and testing enterprise-grade PHP applications, making it the most complete enterprise application development solution available for PHP." Got that? If not, and you want to read the full press release, go to http://www.zend.com/news/zendpr.php?id=97.

Incidentally, this coincides with the free Zend Webcast on May 24. Zend's Webcast topic will be "Best Software Development Practices for PHP". It will start at 12:00 pm EDT and will run 45 minutes. Topics covered include overall best practices in PHP development, code behavior monitoring, query optimization, and performance tuning. If this sounds interesting to you, make sure to sign up right away by going to http://www.zend.com/webcast.php.

AUUG Includes PHP in Annual Conference

AUUG (Australian Unix and Open Systems Users Group) has issued a CfP for its new PHP Track during its annual conference. The conference is scheduled from October 16-21 and includes 3 days of tutorials as well as 3 days of conference activity. (This seems to be a popular week for conferencing, as it coincides with EuroOSCON and Zend's conference). Take note, however, the deadline for submitting proposals is May 27. For more information, you can go to http://auug.org.au/events/2005/auug2005/cfp.html.

Big Names Signing up for OSCON '05

OSCON has added some big PHP names to the speaker's list for the conference in August, including Ilia Alshanetsky, Marcus Börger, Wez Furlong, Zak Greant, Andi Gutmans, Rasmus Lerdorf, George Schlossnagle, Chris Shiflett, David Sklar, Laura Thomson, Adam Trachtenberg, Luke Welling, and Andrei Zmievski. Quite an impressive PHP lineup! To see a complete list of speakers, and to learn more about the conference, go to http://conferences.oreillynet.com/pub/w/38/speakers.html..

Marco Tabini Discusses the PHP Job Market and its Future

In a recent blog post, Marco Tabini (the editor of php|architect) gives us some pretty hefty things to think about in relation to the PHP job market. He brings up some very interesting points about the difference in pay for PHP Developers versus Java Developers, but stats that the future looks bright thanks to increasing popularity and the certification program. For the complete story, visit Marco's blog at http://blogs.phparch.com/mt/index.php?p=45. On a related note, php|architect is sponsoring a free web cast on the PHP Job Market topic on May 27. Go to http://www.phparch.com/symphony to sign up.

Free PHP/Ajax Web Cast on php|architect May 26

You've probably already heard about this, but if you haven't, it will be taking place at 12:00 EDT on May 26 and will last about an hour. Joshua Eichorn will talk about how to incorporate PHP, JPSpan, and Ajax to create dynamic applications. Should prove to be quite informative, and what the heck, it's free. To read more about it, go to: http://www.phparch.com/shop_product.php?itemid=94.

Greg Beaver Announces PEAR_PackageFile2Manager Release

If you've been keeping track of this project, you know that this first release has been Greg Beaver's baby for a while now. One thing to note is that it requires the CVS version of PEAR in order to work properly (until version 1.4.0a12 is released). For more info or to download, check out Greg's blog at http://greg.chiaraquartet.net/archives/59-All-behold-PEAR_PackageFile2Manager!.html or PEAR at http://pear.php.net/pepr/pepr-proposal-show.php?id=254.

phpBB Clarifies Upgrade Concerns

In a recent post to the phpBB site, the phpBB Team attempts to clarify some common concerns users are having with upgrades. If you have found this task to be challenging, you might want to check this out: http://www.phpbb.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=292017.

You can now use your Eclipse configuration manager to import the latest PHPEclipse release. For easy instructions and to update, go to http://www.phpeclipse.de/tiki-view_articles.php.

Sourceforge Breaks 100K Mark

There are now over 100,000 projects listed at Sourceforge, so if you can't find what you need, chances are you're not looking hard enough. Of course, project activity has been boosted with companies like IBM, Google, and even good ol' Microsoft, but you still have to give a big thumbs up to the open source community as a whole. To read the full press release, you can go to http://www.ostg.com/pdfs/SourceForgeProjects_PR_Final1.pdf.

Get a Free ThinkGeek T-Shirt

Sourceforge has extended their "free t-shirt" offer. By becoming a premium subscriber to Sourceforge, you can still get a free t-shirt from the good folks at ThinkGeek. I guess it pays to have connections. Subscriptions are only $39 a year, and the t-shirt is a $15 value, so there you go-- you're helping the open source community and fulfilling one of Maslow's hierarchy of needs in one fell swoop. Why not? For more details, visit Sourceforge at http://sourceforge.net/subscription.php.
