Zend Framework Changes to BSD License

To quote Andi Gutmans, "We have decided to change the license of the Zend Framework from a PHP-like license, to the simpler new BSD license. This was after many discussions we have had with the community and the partners." You will no longer be required to include the advertising clause, and it will be compatible with the GPL. To read more about how this may impact projects you're working on, you can go to the Zend Developer Zone, or read Andi's post to the mailing list, where you can see the license in full.

The PHP Boom, Good News for Us!

Jim Plush has written an interesting blog post about the impending boom of PHP jobs and what we as developers can do to ensure our own success. There is some very sound advice in this post--you should give it a quick read. As well, take a look at Ben Ramsey's blog who has a few words to add to Jim's suggestions. Ben's blog can be found at

A New CEO for Zend

A quick tip from a few sources reveals that Doron Gerstel, the former CEO for Zend, has resigned his position and moved to Syneron Medical Ltd. PEAR/PECL Releases

I would be remiss in my duties if I didn't include what's new at PEAR and PECL. Recent PEAR releases include:
  • Log - Logging utilities
  • PEAR_PackageUpdate - A simple way to update packages at run time.
  • Mail - Class that provides multiple interfaces for sending emails
  • HTML_Table - PEAR::HTML_Table makes the design of HTML tables easy, flexible, reusable and efficient.
  • DB_Table - Builds on PEAR DB to abstract datatypes and automate table creation, data validation, insert, update, delete, and select; combines these with PEAR HTML_QuickForm to automatically generate input forms that match the table column definitions
  • Validate_ptBR - Validation class for ptBR
  • Image_Puzzle - Generates puzzle pieces from image file

And for PECL, we had:

  • hash- HASH Message Digest Framework
  • zip - A zip management extension

As always, you can download or learn more about these packages at and

See you next week with more tidbits from the PHP world!
