I'll recommend ODBC: (http://www.iodbc.org/odbc-phpHOWTO.html,
www.openlinksw.com)
Manual Lemos will recommend Metabase: (http://phpclasses.UpperDesign.com)
Depending on if you want cross-platform middleware or an application
framework those are two places to start.
