Rasmus:
Thank you for the impressively quick reply.
I also have a related reply from ZEEV.
It appears then that I must have installed the MySQL source distribution in
order to have PHP link to MySQL functions.
I have alternatively tried to install a PHP module from
mod_php3-3.05.1.i386.rpm, which (according to its description), includes
already MySQL support, but this did not give me the mysql_connect()
function, so I decided to go back to basics and compile php directly, with
the failure reported (sorry for my ignorance).
I must admit however that I am at a complete loss as to where to go from
here, other than to install from source tarballs for MySQL, Apache, and PHP
(presumably in that order).
