[PHP-DEV] .php TLD From: Mark Jeftovic (markjr <email protected>)
Date: 04/23/99

In the process of staking claim to a few TLD's (Top Level Domains) with the
ORSC (Open Root Server Confederation, http://www.open-rsc.org) and also the
SuperRoot (http://b.superroot.com/) we have claimed the .php TLD on
behalf of the PHP development/programming/and user communities.

This means basically nothing, as a miniscule fraction (easily less than 1%)
of nameservers actually use these alternative staging roots and thus, this
TLD is invisible to the Internet for the most part.

Having said that, we claimed it (and a few others) anyways on the off chance
that ICANN implodes, Esther Dyson has a religious experience and decides to
open the legacy roots, one of the myriad eccentric billionaires on the
domain-policy mailing list invests heavily in easyDNS, or some other unlikely
event transpires that makes these TLD's visible to the world at large.

Second level domains will still be registered in .php for novelty purposes,
and even intranet/extranet functions. (All any given server has to do is
either use a staging root hints file or secondary .php and you're in business)

We haven't developed the registry or the whois server yet for .php, so at
the moment there will be no 2nd level registrations aside from obvious
things that come from the core development team.

This will probably be a chartered TLD, so if anyone cares to draft the
charter feel free and send it to my attention.

We'll make further information available as we have it.
