  I have investigated it further. Now it seems it is not in PHP. I removed our
czech-encoding-conversion and authentification module from Apache and it worked
OK. Sorry. What lead me to PHP4 was that with PHP3 it worked even with these
turned on. So it is highly probable problem is on our side. Sorry again.
