[PHP-DEV] PHP 4.0 Beta 3, and PHP 4.0 Release From: Zeev Suraski (zeev <email protected>)
Date: 09/02/99

Fellow developers,

I think we should be thinking about a third, and possibly final beta for
PHP 4.0. Things may turn out so that we may need another beta (Beta 4),
but I don't think we'll need more than that.

Before we go on with Beta 3, I believe we must ensure that PHP 4.0 has the
most up-to-date modules and utility code, and that it is in parity with PHP
3.0.12 (or better, of course).

Authors of patches that were introduced between PHP 3.0.6 and 3.0.12 and
that haven't yet been ported over to PHP 4.0 are urged to port their
changes as soon as possible. As asked a few weeks ago, module authors
should perform updates and additions on the PHP 4.0 tree, and only backport
them to the PHP 3.0 if necessary. The concept is to keep the PHP 4.0 tree
the most current, up-to-date, cutting-edge version.

Looking at the bugs database, we have over 80 bugs, but none of them looks
like a real showstopper (we must try to fix most of them, of course). If
nothing unexpected pops up, I think we should aim to release Beta 3 in
about two weeks from now, to allow everybody some time to port their
remaining PHP 3.x code over to 4.0. I think we're best off releasing on a
Monday, so I suggest we aim for September 20th, 1999 (2.5 weeks from now).
