Thanks all for the help, the main thing I was
missing (besides general autoconf knowledge) was
buildconf. Now things are peachy. I've added a
note about how to build an extension to the
annotated docs at php.net, but for the record I
think it would be very helpful if the docs and
the main PHP distribution included an example of
how to create a 'Hello World' extension.
