Sorry, but I don't know CVS enough to answer the CVS question.

The build problem was problably very basic:

monty <email protected>$ ./configure
loading cache ./config.cache
./configure: syntax error near unexpected token `PHP_CONFIGURE_PART(Running'
./configure: ./configure: line 816: `PHP_CONFIGURE_PART(Running system checks)'

and I don't think it was related to the MySQL update...

Anyway, I have asked Tim here at MySQL to look at testbuilding PHP at
our side; When he as got this to work, he or I will update to the prev
source and do a testbuild and ensure that it builds!
