This is optional, IIUC, because for maybe 90% (?) of the people who
compile PHP, it has no meaning whatsoever. (IE, linux+gcc).
Perhaps there *should* be a note in the INSTALL file or something.
No idea about your crash...that would most likely be a REAL bug. Please
post it (along with your full ./configure line) on bugs.php.net.
