I'm not an expert here, I'm just chanelling the comments I heard on the
PHP Kongress to this list.
Regarding PHP's lacking Application Server abilities the following was
mentioned:
- Distributed Applications
- permanentely running PHP Application, that's not (entirely)
http-request driven

This was what I mentioned in a talk at the congress, I was told that Java
application servers provide more sophisticated means for this.

I do not come from the "Perl world", I directly started with PHP 3 back
then, so I don't know exactly what "use strict" or "-w" are good for, but
error_reporting(E_ALL) seems to be a good start for debugging capabilities,
yes.
Just to make myself clear, the purpose of my mail was not to blame someone
or to criticize PHP. PHP does currently work very good and is perfectly
suited for low to middle complex / trafficked sites and web applications.
_But_ what are the dreams / plans / visions for the future of PHP so that
this state of "excellence" persists? Where will PHP stand in two years from
now? Will it then still be the best choice? Will it become even better and
take over the lead in the market of web development platforms?
Of course, these questions are not easily answered as no one really knows
what the "web" itself will be like in two or three years from. After the
third generation of web sites (the "completely" dynamically driven ones,
we're now having) there will be soon the next generation: web sites and
applications are going to share their data.
Is PHP 4 ready to master this new challenge? I think so, and hopefully the
needed steps in the development (enhancing the functionality and stability
of PHP's CORBA and Java extensions, implementing support for SOAP, etc.)
will be taken soon.
But after that, what? This is, what I think, should be discussed _now_, so
that we can prepare PHP soon enough for the future.
Good night,
Sebastian
