hey john --

off the top of my head, i believe that your php4
probably picked up on your system threads
by default and was thus built with threads.
you'll have to enable threads in apache also.
rebuild apache with LDFLAGS="-lpthread"
that *should* fix your problem (i had the same problem
a while back)
